With five nursing education facilities being built in five communities across Montana — Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Missoula — we’re watching in real time as Montana State University's College of Nursing projects move forward in overlapping succession. To emphasize a feeling of one campus across locations, much of the programming is consistent with a “kit of parts” established across buildings. For example, each facility has a front porch, learning studios, and a nursing gallery. While the built program establishes consistency, variables to the design include aspects inspired by the different regional landscapes of Montana. Farthest along is the Great Falls facility where you can see how beautiful the interiors are developing. The Billings and Bozeman facilities are close behind with completion set for the spring of 2026. Then, we’ll see the Kalispell and Missoula projects finish up in fall of 2026. Stay tuned for more updates as the projects progress! About us
Cushing Terrell was founded in 1938 by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell. Ralph and Everett acted on the belief that integrating architecture, engineering, and design opened the doors for deepened relationships and enhanced creativity: that belief was the beginning of our design practice and still defines us today. Driven by empathy, our multidisciplinary teams work together to design systems and spaces that help people live their best lives, achieve their visions, and enjoy healthy, sustainable built environments. Each year, we complete projects translating into $1 billion in construction costs. These projects include schools, hospitals and clinics; single- and multi-family residences; and recreational, commercial, retail, and industrial developments. Our services include architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and environmental engineering; planning; landscape architecture; interior design; and many more. Hailing from 17 offices in seven states, our comprehensive approach and staff of 450+ professionals spanning 30 disciplines and seven markets enable Cushing Terrell to offer clients unrivaled partnerships, service, and value. With our passion to develop imaginative solutions and forever improve, this is where design meets you.

We began celebrating Unique Week in 2022. It’s a celebration of our Cushing Terrell team that coincides with the annual celebration of the founding of our firm on August 6, 1938. “Cushing Terrell Unique Week is a celebration of YOU — and of all of us together. Because without each other, we wouldn’t have made it this far. The unique character of our company comes from the people who work here, and I think it’s important for all of us to remember that each of us has agency and influence in creating who we are now and who we become tomorrow," said Cushing Terrell President and CEO Greg Matthews, Each year during this time, we celebrate with each other across our offices and online through our intranet to generate fun, comradery, and to get to know each other even better. We share photos, participate in activities, eat food together, and even dress up in our brand colors. We laugh a lot, but also learn a lot about each other, what makes Cushing Terrell special, and about our history over the years. #teambuilding #uniqueweek #AEC #designfirm #architecture #engineering #design

Led by project manager Dave Blaschak, the annual Cushing Terrell Yellowstone River Boat Float shoved off on the morning of Saturday, July 19 with big smiles, blue skies, and (mostly) blue inflatable rafts. Folks shuttled from Otter Creek, where many camped the night before, to the put-in spot at Grey Bear. While rental rafts arrived, dogs retrieved sticks from the shore and kiddos filled their water toys. A group photo was taken, then Dave huddled the oarspeople to relay river conditions and the various sets of rapids that we would encounter along the way. Dave also shared a riddle that would lead to hidden treasures along the float! Cushing Terrell President and CEO Greg Matthews, his wife Missie, and their pup Marley (a black lab) navigated upriver in their aluminum boat and then others, with children in tow, followed them in their jet boats and inflatables. The group floated down rapids, through shallows, and around gravel bars. Many fish were caught by project manager and architect Nick Bowers’ oldest, a relentless young angler. Missie caught a trout too! Lunch was provided on a gravel bar midway through the float and much fun was had by all! #teambuilding #riverfloat #yellowstone #camping #fishingtrip

The Stone Creek Cabins in Lakeside, Montana showcase dreamy, modern design and space efficiency, along with pinpoint utility and comfort. Every cabin is a self-contained haven, complete with a fully equipped kitchen, private patio, and fire pit — all in a mere 500 square feet. Featured in Big Sky Journal, David Koel, director of design and principal at Cushing Terrell, said: “It’s interesting how folks seem to think that ‘more is more,’ but in reality, what many of us really want is simplicity and togetherness." He remarked that the units were built to be somewhat invisible to the Lakeside ecosystem, while offering an ease-of-use and modern appeal. That’s to say, the barrier between the inhabitants of the space and nature should be nearly non-existent as well. This lush and private getaway features nine individual cabins, each named after a Montana river, thoughtfully designed to foster an enchanting connection with the outdoors. Natural wood, stone, and shou sugi ban exterior siding create a distinctive aesthetic that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape. #cabindesign #residentialdesign #montanacabins #natureretreat #moderndesign #montana

Sheri Blattel, director of retail, commented on the importance of community building and customer experience in retail spaces in CoStar News. The article included two projects from Cushing Terrell — an Albertsons renovation in McCall, ID and Town & Country Markets in Mill Creek, WA. "Grocery and food markets have been human connectors for centuries," she said. "It's where you get news and food and share communal activities. Your entire space, not just the interior but also the exterior, needs to engage the consumer."
