  • Meet our BE STARS Scholar Nate Roberts! This summer, Nate participated in the Biomedical Engineering Summer Training and Research Scholars program, working in the Ferruzzi lab under Dr. Jacopo Ferruzzi's guidance. He focused on a fascinating project investigating how the stiffness of the culture environment affects the morphology and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. Nate has been enjoying the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, which have enhanced his understanding of the intricate processes involved in cancer research. He has also appreciated the collaborative atmosphere in the lab, where he's able to engage with fellow researchers and learn about the diverse projects being conducted in the shared space. As a proud UTD student, we can't wait to see where Nate's academic journey will take him!

  • Meet our BE STARS Scholar ErinaShahriear This summer, Erina has been making significant strides in her research as part of the Biomedical Engineering Summer Training and Research Scholars program. This summer, she worked in the Targeted Neuroplasticity Lab under the guidance of Dr. Seth Hays, where she focused on understanding the mechanisms behind neuropathic chronic pain and exploring the potential of vagus nerve stimulation, alongside other methods, to enhance recovery and alleviate pain associated with radial nerve injuries. Erina has shared how much she enjoys the hands-on research experience this program provides. It has allowed her to build new skills, deepen her understanding of neural engineering, and contribute to a project that has real-world implications for pain management. She appreciates the collaborative environment of the lab, working closely with her mentor and fellow students while gaining insights from seasoned researchers. As a proud student from UTD, Erina will be entering her junior year this upcoming fall, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. We can't wait to see where her passion for research takes her next!

  • Meet BE STAR Scholar Ashauntee! Ashauntee was a BE STARS scholar visiting from the University of Texas at Austin. This summer, Ashauntee worked in the Biomechanics of Growth and Remodeling (BG&R) Lab under the guidance of Dr. Kristin Miller, where she was studying and investigating uterine smooth muscle cell mechanosensitivity using polyacrylamide hydrogels. The goal is to understand how extracellular matrix stiffness influences contractility, particularly in the context of postpartum hemorrhage and advanced maternal age. She had the opportunity to present her findings at the Summer Platform for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), highlighting the significant progress she made throughout the summer!

  • This summer, Mehreen Dawood participated in the Biomedical Engineering Summer Training and Research Scholars program, where she gained invaluable hands-on research experience in the Neuromuscular and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Lab under the guidance of Dr. Gu Eon Kang. During her time there, she focused on researching the biomechanics of pitching in baseball. Mehreen had the opportunity to present her findings at the Summer Platform for Undergraduate Research (SPUR), highlighting the significant progress she made throughout the summer!
