Research on metabolism, obesity and diabetes at University of Cambridge
About us
Obesity, type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders present a major and growing global public health challenge. The Institute of Metabolic Science- Metabolic Research Laboratories (IMS-MRL) brings together outstanding scientific and clinical researchers to form an international centre of excellence for research into metabolism and metabolic disease. The MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit (MDU) was established in 2013 to expand the work of the successful MRC Centre for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases. It provides direct support for five high-quality programmes of research that aim to improve understanding of the basic mechanisms responsible for obesity and related metabolic diseases. It also includes key core facilities that support investigators based at IMS-MRL and in the surrounding area. Such close ties with local Units and Institutes provide MDU scientists with unique opportunities to explore the genetic, epigenetic and physiological bases of obesity and metabolic disease. The MDU is the first MRC-University unit to be developed from scratch. It is based at the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) and is part of a joint initiative between the MRC and Wellcome that supports obesity research in Cambridge.

The gut's hidden messengers: unlocking the signalling pathways of human serotonin release. Research recently published as article in press at @Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CMGH) and led by Dr Constanza Alcaino from the Fiona Gribble/Frank Reimann group, and colleagues at the Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratories and elsewhere, has for the first time, provided a complete expression and functional profile of human enterochromaffin cells which help control how our gut moves and feels. Fantastic and well done 👏
I was honoured to present my research project at the annual Student Symposium in Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratories last Friday. It was a truly rewarding experience to share my work and engage in insightful discussions with colleagues in the field of metabolic health. 🙌 I'm deeply grateful to my supervisor, Toni Vidal-Puig MD PhD FRCP FMedSci MBA, and postdoc, Dr Vanessa Pellegrinelli, and all other lab members, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout my research journey and everyday life. ☺️

🐁 The final paper from my PhD is out in The Journal of Physiology! ❤️ We studied the cardiovascular effects of prenatal metformin exposure in a mouse model of gestational glucose intolerance (a model of GDM). The oral drug metformin is increasingly used to treat diabetes in pregnancy, as it is cheaper and less invasive than insulin injections. Unlike insulin, metformin readily crosses the placenta, and long-term effects on offspring cardiovascular health remain unexplored. We show that offspring of GDM-like mice developed hypertension and diastolic cardiac dysfunction by the time they reached middle age. Maternal metformin treatment did not improve but worsened the cardiovascular phenotype, introducing independent cardiovascular alterations in offspring of both sexes. Male metformin-exposed mice had cardiac stiffening and vascular dysfunction while female mice developed obesity-induced hypertension, showing sexual dimorphism in metformin's prenatal effects. Our work highlights that long-term cardiovascular follow up in offspring (of both sexes!) from human metformin-treated pregnancies is crucial to make more informed decisions about metformin use in pregnancy - a tricky question that requires balancing mum and baby's health. The project was initiated (and most of the work was done) during my PhD at the Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratories, but it has been a four-year-long collaborative effort to get it over the finish line. I'm incredibly excited to finally share this work with you! Full paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/evV58fyd Funders: British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council I will present some of this (and other) work at the 13th DOHaD World Congress in Buenos Aires in September, so will be very glad to connect with anyone attending 👩🔬👨🔬
