Recently completed, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University serves as the permanent home of the King Papers Project, which publishes the definitive collection of Dr. King’s writings, speeches, and correspondence. Founded in 2005, the Institute maintains the world’s largest online archive of previously inaccessible materials and works to preserve and advance Dr. King’s legacy through research, education and public engagement. The space is designed to encourage exploration of the Institute’s work and by extension encourage visitors to engage with Dr. King’s legacy. The architecture of the seminar room is built out of the foundation of the Institutes 14 volumes. The arrangement of the volumes, display cases and history of Dr. King transforms the space from a mere meeting room into a sanctuary of civil rights history, where the physical presence of these volumes reminds us that we stand as part of something far larger than ourselves - a continuing movement for justice and human dignity. Check out the progress of Power Station Block 7B where the Sophie Maxwell Building is taking shape! Located in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood, the mixed-use 82,000 sf project will feature 105 affordable apartments and ground floor retail, drawing inspiration from the industrial quality of the historic site. Block 7B is part of the larger Potrero Power Station Mixed-Use Project, which will transform the 29-acre site of a decommissioned power station into a vibrant waterfront community. “We’re thrilled to share that PG&E power has officially come onsite. Also worthy of celebration: the first street trees have arrived, adding a burst of green and a sneak peek at the lush, walkable streetscape that will define the neighborhood. As sidewalk installation and landscaping kick into gear, our vision for a vibrant, people-friendly space is becoming manifest. And just wait until you step inside—Sophie Maxwell has a treat in store with stunning interiors we can’t wait to unveil,” says the Power Station in a recent newsletter (https://lnkd.in/gYcg8yfN). 📸 Photos by Henrik Kam / courtesy of Power Station. Re-visioning access for all, check out the concept design for #HallidiePlaza: Located in downtown San Francisco at the intersection of Market and Powell Streets adjacent to the Powell Street BART station and the historic Powell Street Cable Car Turntable, Hallidie Plaza is one of the city’s most heavily travelled urban portals. Yet since its completion in 1973, the plaza sunken 20 feet below the city around it has been widely criticized as a “desolate” urban space. LMSA's #concept proposal for Hallidie Plaza re-envisions it as an inviting threshold to the City that welcomes everyone, celebrating the rich diversity of the human condition, the vibrant activity of the urban setting, and the iconic ecologies of Northern California. It focuses on creating a memorable visitor experience of passage.
