When it comes to compassionate care, Shoshana Hacker, RN, truly goes above and beyond. A recent DAISY Award winner, Shoshana was recognized for her swift action and clinical instincts. In one instance, she noticed petechiae—small, pinpoint red or purple spots on a newborn’s skin—and advocated for bloodwork. That decision led to a diagnosis of a rare condition known as NAIT (Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia). Her quick thinking ultimately saved the baby’s life. As a postpartum nurse, she continues to provide outstanding care to new moms and babies, from stepping in to support breastfeeding when a lactation consultant wasn’t available to closely monitoring vital signs and always prioritizing the needs of each family. We’re proud to honor Shoshana for this well-deserved recognition and for the dedication she brings to every patient, every day. #DAISYAward #NurseAppreciation #PostpartumCare #ExtraordinaryNurses #Nurses #RNLife #NursesOfInstagram #TheDAISYAwards #HealthCareWorkers #HealthCareProfessionals #EmployeeRecognition #CompassionateCare #WeAreMSMC

In early 2024, Jorge Piedra began having trouble swallowing. After receiving an endoscopy, the worst was confirmed: it was esophageal cancer. Jorge was referred to Kfir Ben-David, MD, the Roni Jacobson Endowed Chairman of Surgery and General Surgery Program Director at Mount Sinai, whom Jorge says made him feel comfortable — and hopeful — at the very first meeting. “I liked that he had a plan. He wanted to attack the cancer fast and hard,” Jorge says. “He instilled confidence in me.” While he’s still undergoing treatment to make sure the cancer doesn’t return, Jorge continues to feel reassured by Dr. Ben-David’s optimism. “When he said he had a plan, he meant it,” Jorge says. “They have a positive attitude about my recovery. Bottom line is, this disease could take my life. But they always reassure me.” His advice for others facing a similar diagnosis? “There’s going to be a lot of people that will have opinions on what you should do, or where you should go. I picked Mount Sinai, and now that I’m at the end of my treatment, I truly believe it was the right answer.” Learn more about Jorge’s inspiring journey here: https://bit.ly/4lV1QA3

It’s #WorldLungCancerDay, and did you know lung cancer is still the #1 cause of cancer death in the U.S., yet only 16% of eligible Americans are getting screened? As concerns grow around youth vaping and its impact on long-term lung health, our experts are leading the charge in prevention, early detection, and life-saving treatment. Dr. Fernando Safdie and Dr. Roy Williams treat vaping-related conditions and aim to raise awareness among young adults about the dangers of vaping. They are also pioneers in robotic lung cancer surgery, helping reduce time from diagnosis to treatment. It’s time we start discussing early screening, education, and the innovative care that’s changing outcomes right here in our community. #WorldLungCancerDay #LungHealth #YouthVaping #LungCancerAwareness #CancerPrevention #EarlyDetectionSavesLives
