🎓 Celebrating emerging voices in climate-smart MSP We are delighted to congratulate Nancy Cross on the successful submission of her Master’s thesis: “Climate-smart marine spatial planning to support long-term conservation of marine biodiversity: barriers and future actions.” Her research tackles one of the most urgent challenges of our time — how to make marine spatial planning (MSP)adaptive, dynamic, and truly ecosystem-based. Nancy’s conclusion highlights the essence of climate-smart MSP: “The world is changing. If MSP can become adaptive, implementing dynamic and evidence-based planning, it can be a powerful vehicle to promote climate action, ensure ecosystem protection, and facilitate the sustainable use of marine resources into the future. The actions outlined in this thesis represent critical steps toward that vision.” 👏 Congratulations, Nancy! 🌊 Last week, we marked #MPADay2025 — a global reminder of the incredible people dedicated to safeguarding the ocean, our planet’s blue heart. 🌍 Although international conservation goals are ambitious, only 0.2% of European MPAs currently prohibit harmful human activities. When well-managed, however, #MPAs remain a cornerstone for protecting and restoring marine biodiversity. 🌊 At MSP4BIO, we were proud to have co-organised this high-level workshop in Brussels alongside CrossGov, with the support of PERMAGOV EU and BlueGreen Governance . 🌊 #MSP4BIO at MPAinMSP in Bodø: Driving Forward Marine Protection and Planning Last week’s MPAinMSP Conference in Bodø, Norway, brought together global experts to explore the future of MarineProtectedAreas (#MPA) and their integration into MarineSpatialPlanning (#MSP). Organised by our sister project, MPA Europe Project, this high-impact event showcased the latest research, tools, and strategies for effective and ecosystem-based ocean governance. 🌍 🔹 MSP4BIO Highlights: 🧭 Martina Bocci presented the ESE Framework — #MSP4BIO’s flagship tool for embedding biodiversity into #MSP. 🌐 Ivana Stojanović introduced our guide for integrating #MPAs into #MSP, supporting smarter, more coherent marine planning. 📌 Elena Gissi shared insights on scoping key management questions for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation. ⚙️ Camila Pegorelli Gomes & Débora Gutierrez 🌊 Creative Solutions/ Project Management showcased strategies for aligning Blue Economy sectors with Ecosystem-based management inside #MPAs.
