MBARI technology reveals new insights about deep-sea octopus and opens the door for future bioinspired robots 🐙🤝🤖 Innovative imaging technologies are helping answer fundamental questions about marine life. The EyeRIS camera system developed by MBARI’s Biopinspiration Lab collects near real-time three-dimensional visual data about the structure and biomechanics of ocean animals. By outfitting one of MBARI’s robotic submersibles with EyeRIS, MBARI Principal Engineer Kakani Katija and a team of researchers were able to observe deep-sea pearl octopus as they crawled across the rugged rocky terrain of the famous Octopus Garden offshore of Central California. The 3D visual data they collected has provided important new insights about octopus locomotion that can open the door to designing exciting new octopus-inspired robots and other technologies in the future. Developed with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, EyeRIS is a game changer for studying biomechanics of marine animals in their natural environments.
