About us
The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation invests in creative thinkers and problem solvers working to ensure that people, communities, and the planet can flourish. Together with our partners, we are harnessing society’s collective capacity to solve our toughest problems — from the existential threat of climate change, to persistent and pervasive inequities, to attacks on democracy itself. A nonpartisan philanthropy, the Hewlett Foundation has made grants in the U.S. and globally for nearly six decades based on an approach that emphasizes long-term support, collaboration, and trust.

The Bay Area arts community lost an incredible creative and advocate with Patty's passing. Their work made so many lives better; Patty will be sorely missed.
The passing of Patricia (Patty) Berne for me brings a tidal wave of sadness. Underneath that, though, is a deep gratitude for the powerful legacy that Patty gave to us. It continues to be a true honor to steward support for Sins Invalid on behalf of the Hewlett Foundation (TY Emiko Ono for entrusting this relationship to me). I know I am one among many who will try, so imperfectly, to carry forward with me Patty's spirit and teachings, especially their creativity, tenacity, and vision of freedom and justice. https://lnkd.in/gn_wpH-v

Congratulations to our Environment Program Director Jonathan Pershing who, in 2026, will become the inaugural dean of the Global School of Sustainability at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)! Jonathan’s eight-year term with Hewlett will come to a close at the end of the year, and he will start his new position in January. Jonathan's leadership at Hewlett has left a lasting mark, playing a vital role in advancing the foundation’s vision for a future where communities are healthy and vibrant, good jobs help build thriving societies, and both people and nature flourish. More than a globally respected climate expert, Jonathan has been a dedicated steward of the foundation’s charitable giving and has helped shape some of our most important contributions to climate and conservation work. We are deeply grateful for all he has contributed, and we are excited to see him continue his longstanding commitment to finding innovative solutions to the climate crisis at LSE next year.
🌍 Big #Sustainability news at LSE! We are delighted to welcome Dr Jonathan Pershing as the Inaugural Dean of the Global School of Sustainability at LSE (GSoS). With a distinguished career spanning the US Department of State, Department of Energy, the World Resources Institute, and the International Energy Agency, Dr Pershing brings significant expertise in climate diplomacy and policy. Founded in 2025, GSoS is LSE’s ambitious step toward shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future. 🌎 https://ow.ly/xcb650WgM3W

The announcement of the 2025 Rainin Arts Fellows affirms that artists are masterful shapers of the stories we tell ourselves. I am especially proud that the #HewlettFoundation has been funding Brenda Wong Aoki's organization, #FirstVoice, since 2004. And Vanessa Sanchez and her group, the brilliant #LaMezcla received a Hewlett #50ArtsCommissions award in 2020. All of the awardees have worked so hard to get to where they are today. I'm grateful for the recognition and resources these grants, administered by #UnitedStatesArtists, do for artists. - Brenda Wong Aoki (Theater) - Christy Chan (Public Space) - Kyle Casey Chu AKA Panda Dulce (Film) - Vanessa Sanchez (Dance) Congratulations to all the Rainin Fellows!

Supporting organizations that spearhead evidence-informed policymaking (EIP) is a core focus of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. To see EIP in action, check out our new blog highlighting the impact of two of our grantees in Uganda: The Center for Rapid Evidence Synthesis (ACRES) and Pollicy. Thank you Irene M. and Rhona Mijumbi for bringing these stories to light.
