MBARI technology reveals new insights about deep-sea octopus and opens the door for future bioinspired robots 🐙🤝🤖 Innovative imaging technologies are helping answer fundamental questions about marine life. The EyeRIS camera system developed by MBARI’s Biopinspiration Lab collects near real-time three-dimensional visual data about the structure and biomechanics of ocean animals. By outfitting one of MBARI’s robotic submersibles with EyeRIS, MBARI Principal Engineer Kakani Katija and a team of researchers were able to observe deep-sea pearl octopus as they crawled across the rugged rocky terrain of the famous Octopus Garden offshore of Central California. The 3D visual data they collected has provided important new insights about octopus locomotion that can open the door to designing exciting new octopus-inspired robots and other technologies in the future. Developed with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, EyeRIS is a game changer for studying biomechanics of marine animals in their natural environments. The Yurok Tribe has secured the largest land back transfer is California History. In May the final section of more than 47,000 acres of ancestral lands was formally returned and will be protected as the Blue Creek Salmon Sanctuary and Yurok Tribal Community Forest. Forests like these are one of the most powerful tools we have for slowing climate change— providing clean air, water, other life-sustaining resources, and a home to countless animals. ➡️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gKhXMpnX

Congratulations to 2012 Packard Fellow Milos Popovic and team for developing the world’s first electronic–photonic quantum chip created in commercial setting! “This is a small step on that path—but an important one, because it shows we can build repeatable, controllable quantum systems in commercial semiconductor foundries.” - Miloš Popović Chips like this could become building blocks for technologies ranging from secure communication networks to advanced sensing and, eventually, quantum computing infrastructure. 💡 Learn more about their milestone discovery: https://lnkd.in/eBQRnDWw
