What happens when the world’s most popular game tackles the world’s biggest problems? The Mojang Studios team never stop finding ways to merge the digital world of Minecraft with real world projects and opportunities related to climate action and sustainability. And when we opened the "Best Green Activation" category in the 2024 Playing for the Planet Awards, four out of five of our finalists came from Minecraft. Partnering with BBC Studios on the Frozen Planet I & II installments, the team invited players to immerse themselves in the daily lives of local wildlife in the harsh conditions of the world's cryosphere. They incentivised e-waste recycling with Elkjøp Norge AS – the largest tech -retailer in the Nordics – through an in-game currency exchange programme that sparked imitations in the US and UK. And since January 2023, students across seven cities all over the world dedicated nearly 100,000 hours to urban innovation through the Schools Reinventing Cities partnership with C40 Cities —that's the equivalent of more than 11 years! It was a no-brainer, then, that the Changemaker category for leadership in a studio should go to Mojang. But who should we choose next? Subway Surfers players went All in for Nature! 💚 For the sixth year in a row, Subway Surfers participated in Playing for the Planet annual Green Game Jam. To raise awareness, a special tree frog-inspired outfit for our character Yutani was available for purchase, with the proceeds going to conservation efforts via On the Edge Fund. Together with our players we raised $18,000, with the proceeds going to conservation of overlooked species, like the Purple Frog, Electric Blue Gecko and Kakapo, and their habitats via On the Edge Fund. How should we continue to go All In for Nature in 2026? That's right! We're calling on you -- the games industry -- to vote on the theme for the Green Game Jam 2026. Our options are... 🕊️ 🐝 Birds & Bees: This theme celebrates the everyday wonders of nature, birdsong in city parks, bees buzzing on balconies. It’s about rebuilding our connection to the nature all around us, even with most of us living in urban areas. 🌊🌿 Reefs & Rainforests: From coral reefs to tropical canopies, these rich ecosystems are vital to life on earth but many of us will never see them up close. By exploring reefs and rainforests you can spotlight the big, bold biodiversity we depend on, even from afar. 🗺️ Why we're focusing on these themes: When we don’t notice nature, we stop valuing it. When we stop valuing it, we start to lose it.
