#FlashbackFriday - Launching of the 7,100-ton turbine power steamer Thordis from Oakland’s Moore shipyard near the foot of Adeline Street, Inner Harbor, January 1917. During World War I, shipyards saw rapid growth. Moore Shipbuilding Company was originally known as Moore and Scott Ironworks before becoming a shipbuilding company. Later the name would change to Moore Dry Docks Company. (Courtesy: San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, W.A. Muhlman Collection.) #portofoakland #Oakland

We are committed to helping small and local businesses thrive through certifications, equitable contracting, grant funding, and partnerships that expand access and opportunity. 📽️ See this impact in action: Watch how the Port’s partnership helped #Oakland-based, Kenyan American, woman-owned Wachira Wines scale their operations, connect with the community, and bring bold ideas to life. #FlashbackFriday – The Port of Oakland was established in 1927 as an independent department of the City of Oakland. Long before that, the area was already bustling with activity. In this photo from the 1800s, horse-drawn wagons are loading goods onto a ferry boat for delivery across the San Francisco Bay. Note square-rigger ships in the background and rail tracks at left. #portofoakland #oakland

#FlashbackFriday – Discharging copra at the Seventh Street Unit, Outer Harbor Terminal in 1938. Copra is the dried, white flesh of the coconut from which coconut oil is extracted. In this early example of intermodal operations at the Port of Oakland, bulk copra was unloaded from holds with suction hoses and deposited in dockside hoppers for transfer to rail cars and trucks. #portofoakland #oakland
