The second day of our General Assembly was marked by fruitful discussions and a hands-on visit to the Turkish demo site! The first day of our 4th General Assembly took place at the TÜBİTAK premises in Gebze, Türkiye. A full agenda of project updates and technical discussions brought together all partners to review progress, exchange experiences, and align on the next steps. All project Work Packages were presented and discussed, covering key topics such as the #RHEMEDIATION hub ecosystem, technology deployment, pilot site implementation, early validation results, and stakeholder engagement strategies. On the occasion of the 4th Postgraduate Student Symposium of the Chemistry Department at the Ethnikon kai Kapodistriakon Panepistimion Athinon, EYDAP had the opportunity to present #RHEMEDiation and its activities addressing chemical pollution in the Mediterranean. The presentation “Microalgae as a Nature-Based Solution for Cleaner Waters: From Wastewater Treatment Plants to the Marine Ecosystem” focused on the role of microalgae in wastewater treatment and water recovery, with particular attention to the removal of both legally regulated parameters and emerging pollutants — including PFAS, pharmaceuticals, and priority substances — thus addressing complex water pollution challenges. The session attracted strong interest from young researchers interested in how biotechnological and nature-based solutions can contribute to improving water quality and protecting marine ecosystems. 🎥How do we ensure optimal efficiency during the testing phase of our system? During our experimental campaign, we’re closely monitoring and adjusting operations based on real-time data, but what does that actually mean? In this video, Davide Liberti from Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) explains how key water quality indicators are used to evaluate both system performance and microalgal activity. Specifically, we’re tracking nitrogen content and turbidity or chlorophyll levels. While nitrogen levels reflect the wastewater treatment efficiency, chlorophyll and turbidity signal microalgae growth. Our greek partners EYDAP and Hellenic Center for Marine Research recently conducted a comprehensive survey of the coastal area adjacent to the Thriasio Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Elefsis Gulf, aboard the research vessel R/V AEGAEO, under the framework of Mission Ocean. During this one-day campaign, the two research teams deployed Scylla and Cariddi—autonomous robotic buoys equipped with advanced sensors—officially launching real-time monitoring of the marine ecosystem as part of the #RHEMEDiation project.
