SHIFTSPACE is a Philadelphia-based design studio focused on the interplay of architecture and industrial design. Led by Mario Gentile and Tim Barnes, the multidisciplinary team engages with brands, institutions, and cities to complete projects at varying scales. Their work ranges from large scale urban interventions and creative placemaking to architecture and furniture, designed under their brand Shift. The studio has been blending architectural space, public art, and landscapes together with places and products since 2009.

We’re excited to support VENd, an innovative installation at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, part of the European Cultural Centre’s TIME SPACE EXISTENCE exhibition in the Giardini della Marinaressa. Designed by SHIFTSPACE Design in collaboration with Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University, VENd explores new possibilities for adaptable, informal market structures in urban environments. The modular kiosk system allows vendors to customize their setup while meeting the structural and aesthetic standards required by municipalities. As material partners, we’re proud that VENd features a roof made from repurposed EQUITONE [inspires] facade material off-cuts. These panels — printed, laced together, and suspended from a metal lattice — form a flowing, textile-like canopy. Additionally, EQUITONE [lunara] was used to craft the countertop. The design showcases the creative reuse and circular potential of EQUITONE fiber cement materials, extending their impact beyond traditional façade applications. The installation will be open to the public through November 23, 2025. Introducing VENd, our installation at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, part of the European Cultural Centre TIME SPACE EXISTENCE exhibition in the Giardini della Marinaressa. VENd is an experimental market kiosk system designed for street vendors and cities alike. As an adaptable system, VENd allows vendors to create informal markets while maintaining the safety and standardization that municipalities desire. Vendors can modify and customize the form colors and arrangement to best suit their business. The textile-like sweeping roof is composed of off-cuts and repurposed EQUITONE Export facade panels that are printed, strung together, and attached to a metal lattice. VENd was created through a partnership with Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University The project will be on display from May 10th through November 23rd.
