New resource from TechTonic Justice: a critic's guide to deciding if AI is right for your organization. It's a punchy 5 pages of the right questions to ask before hopping on the AI hype train. Many people in non-profit and government organizations feel like AI is being uncritically forced upon them by boards, elected officials, or senior leadership desperate to do more with their too-few resources. Caught up in the hype of the people selling AI, organizations commit to AI projects that can be costly, unimpressive, harmful to communities served, and otherwise risky. TTJ's guide will help you think carefully about the key issues: what AI can do, what it *shouldn't* do, the deep vetting and oversight needed, and the impact on staff and the communities you serve. We hope that it slows down irresponsible or inappropriate AI uses and minimizes the potential harms where organizations decide to move forward. Please share and let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/gSd5ETxM

  • What a powerful week it’s been. 🎤 Our team had the privilege of speaking at two conferences this week, where advocates, social justice warriors, like-minded do-gooders, and lawyers gathered together to reimagine what justice looks like for the people AI leaves behind. From Andrea Reyes speaking at the Pax Christi USA Conference in Detroit on Resisting a surveillance state: Racism, warfare, and economic injustice powered by AI without ethics alongside powerful social justice organizers: Tawana Petty, and Jalal Abukhater. To Kevin De Liban speaking at a conference to the top leadership of legal aid programs throughout the South about how AI is “innovating” injustice and how lawyers and advocates can fight back. Legal aid programs are key partners in reducing the suffering that low-income people experience as a result of AI. They directly help millions of people every year who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a lawyer. As more low-income people face more AI-based decisions, it’s the legal aid community who will be on the frontlines fighting back. We’re making moves and getting closer each and every day to build collective power resisting the ground-level harms that AI, algorithms, and related technologies inflict on low-income people nationwide by supporting, coalescing, and catalyzing local justice movements—including frontline advocates and affected communities— to litigate, educate, and organize.

    • Kevin, the executive director for TechTonic Justice, standing on a stage presenting a hope and present moment slide of his presentation to leaders of legal aid programs.
  • Medicaid & Medicare turned 60 today, weeks after Trump’s Reconciliation Bill cut $1,000,000,000,000 from federal healthcare spending - defunding Medicaid and cutting health care for around 17 million people. TechTonic Justice will continue fighting to hold our government accountable to ensure that people who need public benefits can access them WITHOUT the interference of algorithmic decision-making models. Though our elected officials chose to side with profits over people yet again we’re choosing to do right by people. Because you’re not going to wear us out, you’re not going to outwork us, we’re not going away, we’re smarter than you, and we’re coming for you! Read through our Inescapable AI Executive Summary to learn more about how AI decision-making impacts our ability to survive, share with any organizations in your networks that benefit from this information, or shoot us a message to set up a training. • Happening July 23! We’re excited to train California’s legal aid and access-to-justice community on the ways that AI is being harmfully used to decide the housing, work, schooling, survival, and health care of low-income people. Learn what’s happening and how to fight back.

Our community has asked for training on responding to the ways in which AI is being used unfairly — by government agencies, landlords, and other opposing parties. In response to these needs, LAAC is partnering with Kevin De Liban, Founder and President of TechTonic Justice, to present this webinar on opposing these harmful practices and advocating for regulation and improved practices involving AI. Lots of other important things happening in the world, but, if you want to understand the threat AI poses to all of us, starting with low-income folks, watch/listen my appearance on CXOTalk a couple weeks back. Host Michael Krigsman and the keen audience prompted a lot of discussion about (1) where AI is used to make decisions, (2) how AI differs from previous methods of making decisions, (3) the not-inevitability of AI, and (4) how technical fights about AI obscure the important political dimensions of it, particularly in light of the current authoritarian moment the U.S. faces with the president and his administration. It gets at the heart of TechTonic Justice’s work. Watch/listen and let me know what you think! #CXOTalk https://lnkd.in/gAGZiwi5

Super excited to be included in this wonderful series for anyone wanting to better understand the present dangers of the collusion between Big Tech and the administration. Each of the short essays in the series can be read in a few minutes. Various topics will be covered over the next couple weeks, including the myth of artificial general intelligence, the challenges of using AI to reform government, the use of child safety as a trojan horse to enable censorship, and much, much more. My own essay discussing how AI threatens the stability and resources needed for meaningful democratic participation should be dropping in the next couple days. Many thanks to Tech Policy Press and Data & Society Research Institute for pulling together this project! The series incorporates so many important voices and issues. The first articles are up today, so go check them out! https://lnkd.in/gi-QfDMy

I’m excited to invite you to a meaningful conversation on combatting the harms of AI that TechTonic Justice and I are hosting on June 10 with my friends at Spitfire. Artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t only about robots and ChatGPT; it’s also quietly making decisions that seriously affect people’s lives. Who gets housing, health care, education and even a second chance. And when these systems get it wrong (which they often do), it’s folks with the fewest resources who get hit the hardest. In this session, I’ll share how the government, banks, businesses and employers are using AI to make high-stakes decisions about people’s lives without their knowledge or consent and what we can do to push back. I hope you’ll join me and maybe bring a friend too. You can register for the session at this link: https://lnkd.in/gR6MeAY4

A powerful report from Kevin De Liban of TechTonic Justice reveals that AI systems now make decisions affecting the access to healthcare, housing, and employment of 92 million Americans. Kevin is a genuine crusader against algorithmic inequality and injustice. His findings challenge fundamental assumptions about algorithmic efficiency and accountability. On CXOTalk episode 882, we'll explore the gap between AI's promise and its implementation reality, examining cases where major vendors repeatedly delivered systems that caused mass harm while avoiding traditional oversight mechanisms. Join us for a conversation that moves beyond the hype to examine what responsible AI deployment actually requires and learn key lessons for your business.
