Small businesses “comprise 99.9 percent of all businesses, contribute up to 44 percent of GDP, and employ nearly half of all private-sector workers, but forty percent never reopen after a natural disaster, and an additional 25 percent close a year later,” writes The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program (FSP). Earlier this year, the FSP, in partnership with U.S. Bank, co-hosted a private roundtable discussion during Aspen Ideas: Climate with leaders from the financial services ecosystem. The roundtable covered a variety of topics, including the role of financial institutions in the wake of severe weather events. Some of the tensions and tradeoffs attendees identified include: 📌 Whether specific solutions should be implemented in response to severe weather events, as opposed to more general support. 📌 Investing in products that support resilience against severe weather impacts versus products that help people rebuild after the impact of the event. 📌 How credit scores are impacted and how they should be viewed in the aftermath of a severe weather event. Exciting news from our global network! Last month, Aspen Institute Kyiv launched the Aspen Kyiv Challenge—the first-ever Aspen Challenge held outside the U.S. The Challenge brought together 300 teenage students from six schools in Bucha and Borodianka for a civic leadership program designed to empower young people to rebuild and strengthen their communities. Over two days, participants heard from national leaders, role models, and experts, learned from stories of social transformation, and connected with like-minded young changemakers. Each team will now receive a $500 seed grant to bring their projects to life, with results showcased at the Solutions Showcase in February. Congratulations to our partners at Aspen Institute Kyiv for inspiring the next generation of leaders! https://lnkd.in/eCJ7DSbB

A recent report by More in Common revealed that “56% of [surveyed] Americans say they want to connect with people who are different and 66% say they believe they can learn something valuable that way.” So why don’t they? In a new essay on the site, Michael Skoler, Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute’s former Sr. Director, Communications & Strategy, highlights that most polled participants stated that they want to work together across differences on a shared goal that will improve their communities, but find that they do not have opportunities to connect in this manner. During this month’s Aspen Ideas: Economy, Shira Lazar held a live recording of her podcast, “The AI Download,” where she sat down with Bob Carrigan, CEO of Audible, and poet and multimedia artist Sasha Stiles. During their conversation, the three explored how AI is reshaping art, authorship, storytelling, and the creator economy. Some of the themes explored include: 📌 How Audible is using AI to expand access to audiobooks worldwide 📌 Why artists, like Stiles, have chosen to embrace AI as a collaborator in their work 📌 What it means to be a creative, and to create, in a world shaped by both human and non-human intelligence Listen to their conversation here: https://lnkd.in/dv9ht5mS
