Not a frequent LinkedIn poster, but figured now’s a good time. This week marks my one-year at The Connor Group. On my first day, Chris Riva told me it’d feel like I was drinking from a fire hose. He wasn’t wrong. I’ve learned more about ownership, accountability and pushing past “good enough” in the last year than I have in the 24 before it. I work with a ridiculously talented group of people: Chris, Camille Breck, Julia Brown, Dakota Hoffman, Aaron Helfferich. Each of them push me to be better every day. It's challenging but meaningful, and I've see pay off in real time through our nonprofits like The Greater Dayton School. Grateful for the growth!

Today marks 1 year with The Connor Group — and what a year it has been!🤩 Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how much I’ve grown both personally and professionally. This summer, Connor Kids Academy is back and bigger than ever! 🏀 Connor Kids Academy is part of our non-profit arm, Kids & Community Partners. It is a three-year program for under-resourced boys that uses basketball to teach the importance of healthy habits and making good choices. This year, we’re proud to bring the program to Columbus and The Ohio State University for the first time. We also host camps in Louisville, Cincinnati and Dayton. We’re helping kids in these cities grow as players and as people, and we’re excited to see what they accomplish.

Nobody cares more about your development than you. Some people ask how I grew from a farm kid in rural Mississippi to my current role. The answer is simple, never once did I ask someone else to “develop” me. Maybe it is my humble upbringing, but ownership of my development was never a question. It was me, I own it. If you feel stuck and ask what are “they” doing to develop me, you are asking the wrong question. Go look in the mirror, take an honest assessment of who you see and do something about it! Take advantage of your natural strengths. Find ways to offset your natural weaknesses. You must develop you, no one else. When I first came to The Connor Group, I knew I had to prove myself and that my resume meant nothing. Exhilarating to have control over success or failure. I dug in and learned the business from the ground up. I focused on learning from Larry Connor even when he wasn’t coaching or developing. I honed my craft. I raised my hand for the hard stuff, the things no one else wanted to do. My leadership growth has been stark. It is a combination of my ownership and the high pressure, high demand environment. My advice to those aspiring to do more. Stop waiting for other people to develop you, take on the hard jobs, and never ever blame others for your shortcomings or mistakes. At the end of the day you only need to look in one place to find who delivered success or failure, the mirror. Staring back at you will be both the problem and solution to all you aspire to be.
