The E.W. Scripps Company reposted this
Journalism Matters- Frequently I see people who have left the broadcast journalism business posting negative comments about how bad their time in the industry was and how terrible their leaders treated them. I am sorry for them and their experience. It is true that this industry is not for the faint of heart. It's hard on many levels. Being a journalist and working in a newsroom, the right newsroom, can also be fulfilling, rewarding, full of comradery and a sense of purpose for your community. I wanted to take a moment to remind all of the local newsrooms out there; what you do matters. The stories you tell and the hours you work can be challenging, but they are worth it. The right leaders will work with you when you need a break. Not everyone leaves and loves it. I took time away from the industry only to find myself constantly looking over my shoulder at what was happening in local news, pining for breakers and the fast pace I desperately missed. The outside business world moved far too slow for me. Local news is in my blood. It is a noble and enriching career. I truly love what I do. The E.W. Scripps Company didn't forget about me. They kept reaching out and helped me find a position where I was able to continue to grow. I’ve been with the company nearly 20 years now. Scripps takes pride in having leaders that lead with empathy, heart and mission. It doesn't mean we won't challenge you, but it does mean we care about the people we work with and who they are as humans. Our industry is always evolving and changing. You must be ready for that and embrace it. But please, don't give up on it. America needs local journalists now more than ever and I promise it's far more exciting than writing press releases.
