Did you know that some brain cells respond to both addictive drugs and natural rewards? This has made developing targeted treatments difficult. NIH researchers have developed a way to control neuron activity in a specific part of the brain only when cocaine is present, helping block the effects of cocaine but not food rewards. What is Fentanyl? 💊 Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, FDA-approved for severe pain but often illegally made and mixed into other drugs. It can be taken knowingly or unknowingly in counterfeit pills, powders, or mixed with substances like heroin. Effects include pain relief, euphoria, and drowsiness, and risks include respiratory depression, overdose, and death. Naloxone can reverse an overdose if given quickly.
