I'm not surprised confidence is low. Accepting reality that the job market is tightening is important but so is staying positive and keeping in mind that sentiment can differ from reality. A few factors impacting the former come to mind. 1) Hiring processes slow significantly in the summer and weeks feel like months to people out of work and actively looking. It's a slog. 2) 1-click applying to a job with 100+ applicants doesn't feel great. Especially when applicants don't hear anything back - meaning no response at all - on 75% of online applications. 3) Uncertainty in macroeconomics is unsettling and inescapable in the echo chamber of the current news cycle. When someone is going through a tough period it leaves little room for hope. If you're actively looking, I encourage you to reach out to a recruiter! One of the things I enjoy about the talent profession is being able to help people navigate these times. Candidates are best served by finding a recruiter that specializes in their industry or functional area of focus. When you're actively looking, more recruiters and conversations are better. Results don't always come quick but be patient and realize that developing relationships and being heard are both great things. Interesting article that has overwhelmingly been received as negative news. On the surface level, increased unemployment for recent college grads isn't good. There's another angle to this story though. Necessity is the mother of invention. Some recent grads looking for work will create their own jobs. I think this generation of digitally native professionals are as well suited for entrepreneurship as any and there are unlimited opportunities for them (or anyone) to take chances and innovate.
