In 2020, as the world shut down and events were canceled left and right, a small group of us (Lynn Dohm, Ambareen Siraj, Sarah Morales, me, and the late, great Alan Paller) came together with a big idea: create a program that would provide Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) members real opportunities to build cybersecurity skills and launch careers, even in a world that had suddenly gone 100% remote and was filled with uncertainty. From those conversations, the WiCyS Security Training Scholarship was born, a multi-stage program where every participant walks away with tangible learning outcomes, and the most tenacious learners progress to advanced training, industry certifications, and ultimately, jobs in cybersecurity. What began as a pilot collaboration between WiCyS, SANS Institute, and Google in 2020 has grown far beyond what we ever imagined (or perhaps it grew exactly as we believed it could). Each year, more incredible partners - Bloomberg, Meta, Okta, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Center for Internet Security, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Truist Foundation, and other WiCyS strategic partners - have joined in and supported the program, strengthening the successful outcomes and expanding its reach and impact. Since launching in 2020, over 4,600 learners have gained hands-on cybersecurity skills, and WiCyS STS scholars who completed the SANS Cyber Academy have achieved a remarkable 92% job placement rate, earning over 550 GIAC Certifications as well. Watching participants from myriad backgrounds, many with no technical experience, land their dream jobs in cybersecurity and transform their lives has been the most rewarding part of this journey.
