  • Experimental Characterization of Ethanol-Based Asphalt Foaming Process

    Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT) 2015 Poster Session, Portland (OR)

    The goal of this research is to show the ethanol potential as a foaming agent for the Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology. Different percentages of ethanol were mixed with asphalt binder in order to characterize the foaming effect. Two tests were performed: viscosity and volume change. The viscosity reduction and the volume expansion of the mixed asphalt both improve the workability of the asphalt production. The boiling point of the ethanol (78°C) is much lower than the water (100°C). Therefore,…

Therefore, ethanol-based WMA can produce asphalt in temperatures lower than water-based WMA, reducing energy consumption and gas emission. Also, the entire ethanol is expected to be vaporized after the foaming process, alleviating the moisture susceptibility problem.

Projects

  • Alternatives to Nuclear Density Testing

    -

    The goal of this project is to identify, develop and evaluate some non-nuclear alternative methods to the Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG) that will provide information about the stiffness/modulus of the asphalt pavement to assure its performance with appropriated process and quality control.

  • Fundamental Understanding of Foaming Process towards a New Warm Mix Asphalt Technology

    -

    The project's goal is to characterize the foaming process of a new warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology, using ethanol as a foaming agent. Viscosity and volume change experiments were conducted after mixing asphalt binder with different percentages of ethanol at various temperatures in order to obtain the foaming effect.

  • Electromagnetic and Geotechnical Characterization of a Fine Soil from Brasilia

    -

    This research was the theme of my master's thesis.
    The goal of this project was to characterize a fine soil from Brasilia-DF (Brazil) by using an electromagnetic sensor and the different responses in phase and amplitude of electromagnetic energy to associate electromagnetic properties (dielectric constant) of that soil with geotechnical parameters such as specific weight, moisture content, degree of saturation, void ratio and other physical indexes related to the mass and volume of the…

    This research was the theme of my undergraduate final project.
    The project aimed at economic comparison between different solutions for retaining structures. Soil parameters of a real construction site, located in Brasilia-DF (Brazil), were used in the design of a retaining structure and different solutions were studied, such as:
    - Soil reinforcement with geogrid;
    - Gravity walls;
    - Gabion walls.
