Instead of checking my portfolio (which already has my hard work), the reply I got was: “Send me a free demo logo.” Seriously? This is where the problem starts. 👉 If you don’t trust my portfolio, why ask me to apply? 👉 If you want a logo, hire me — don’t test me for free. Every line, every color, every logo takes hours of thinking and years of practice. It’s not a hobby, it’s a skill. And when someone treats it like a free sample, it doesn’t just insult one designer — it insults the whole community. The best designers aren’t just skilled. They’re curious. Before color palettes, prototypes, or polished systems, great design starts with asking the right questions. Not just “what should this look like?” Think: → What problem is this really solving? → Why now? Why this way? → Does this support the person least comfortable using it? → What’s missing from this conversation? Design isn’t just about building the thing. It’s also about understanding the system around it—like the people, the constraints, the context, the unintended consequences. When your work feels flat, repetitive, or disconnected, it’s often a signal you’ve stopped asking questions. Because the questions we ask determine: → What we prioritize → What we ignore → What we accidentally reinforce → What gets left behind So if you’re feeling stuck in the pixels, zoom out. Your design needs some TLC. Typography Layout Color In that order… You can start a VERY strong foundation by limiting your font sizes, working with a strong explicit and implicit grid system, then choosing a single color to represent action. The majority of designs I review have much room for improvement in these three areas. Too often I see designers jumping to conceptual ideas of style, etc while neglecting typography, layout, and color. Give your designs some TLC and let everything else flow from there.
