The Opportunity
The ELA Coach, Elementary is a 10-month, non-supervisory instructional leadership position, compensated according to the Sela PCS teacher pay scale. This role is focused on building teacher capacity in delivering high-quality ELA instruction across grades K–5, while also providing strategic student support through reading interventions and data-driven practices. The ELA Coach will work in close collaboration with classroom teachers, the academic leadership team, and support staff to promote literacy growth, instructional excellence, and equitable student outcomes.
Job Responsibilities
Instructional Coaching & Teacher Support (50%)
The ELA Coach will serve as a collaborative partner and instructional leader for all K–5 English Language Arts teachers by:
Providing ongoing coaching cycles, including pre-planning, co-teaching, observation, modeling, and debriefing
Supporting teachers in lesson planning, literacy block structure, small group instruction, and differentiated practices
Leading regular grade-level collaborative planning sessions focused on ELA content and instructional best practices
Offering informal feedback on classroom practice through classroom visits, observation notes, and check-ins
Supporting the implementation of the school’s core ELA curriculum and aligning instruction to standards
Planning and delivering targeted professional development aligned with school-wide literacy goals
Direct Reading Intervention (30%)
The ELA Coach will also provide Tier 2 or Tier 3 targeted literacy support for students, especially when aligned to teacher coaching goals, MTSS needs, or school-wide initiatives. This includes:
Conducting diagnostic and formative reading assessments to identify student needs
Delivering small-group or individual reading intervention sessions (push-in or pull-out, as needed)
Collaborating with classroom teachers to plan and monitor targeted supports
Using research-based intervention programs tailored to students’ literacy gaps
Monitoring and documenting student progress and adjusting interventions accordingly
Supporting literacy screening (e.g., DIBELS, NWEA/MAP, or other school-selected tools)
Participating in MTSS meetings and supporting data collection for referrals, RTI, and IEP considerations
Curricular and Data Leadership (20%)
The ELA Coach will support curriculum refinement, data analysis, and school-wide literacy strategy by:
Facilitating weekly grade-level data meetings with teachers and leadership to inform ELA instruction, analyze reading data and adapt instruction accordingly
Maintaining accurate records of coaching plans, teacher goals, and student data outcomes
Reviewing and revising the pacing and sequencing of reading curriculum in collaboration with leadership
Supporting school and network assessments by administering academic testing
Collaborating with the Director of Elementary and academic leadership to align coaching with school goals and teacher development plans
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education; Master’s degree in Reading/Literacy or Curriculum & Instruction preferred
Minimum of 3 years successful elementary teaching experience, preferably in ELA
Demonstrated expertise in literacy instruction, assessment, and intervention strategies
Experience coaching or mentoring teachers strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of the Science of Reading, Common Core ELA standards, and effective Tier 2/3 interventions
Ability to build trust and support adult learners through reflective practice
Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
Job Information
This is a 40-hour non-exempt full-time position. The hours are from 7:45 am to 3:45 pm with one 30-minute break
This position reports to the Director, Elementnary
This position has no supervisory responsibilities
The position falls under the Sela PCS Salary Scale
