Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The patient safety attendant is an employee of CMMF. Under the supervision of an RN, the Patient safety

attendant provides direct observation of a patient at risk for safety. The Patient safety attendant performs

duties in accordance with performance standards established for the job and appropriate to the position. In

addition, the Patient safety attendant conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of

CMMF.

Essential Duties

  • Communicates in a clear and concise manner to the Coordinator/Charge Nurse on the floor.
  • Communicates in a clear and concise manner to RNs
  • Works with the Coordinator/Nurse to assign breaks and meal time.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care to the age groups served.
  • Age specific- Knowledge of normal growth and development.
  • Ability to interpret age-related data.
  • Ability to perform age-specific activities.
  • Ability to interpret age-specific response to activities.
  • Ability to use age-appropriate communication.
  • Reports patient complaint of pain to supervising RN.
  • Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN.
  • Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
  • Treats patient and families with respect and dignity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to function under stressful situations.
  • Ensures environment that optimizes patient safety.
  • Identifies and understands need for PSA
  • Keeps room free of clutter.
  • Ensures adequate lighting.
  • Gives input to care giver when developing a schedule/routine for patient.
  • Engages the patient on outlined activities, (eg. ambulation, focused activities)
  • Ensures safe room for suicide precaution patients.
  • Never leaves the patient
  • Stay within arm’s length.
  • Keeps room door open at all times unless plan of care is determines otherwise.
  • Keeps bathroom door open and is nearby for suicide patients and high-risk safety

  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies after completion of educational requirements as

defined by manager.

  • Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new, activities, alternative techniques,

developmental skills, etc.

  • Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support,

and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.

  • Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all

internal and external customers at all times.

  • Consistently initiates interaction to provide assistance to individuals who may not be direct

customers of the employee (i.e. asks patients who appear to be lost if they need assistance in

finding their way).

  • Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including the maintenance of a

pleasant and professional environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations.

  • Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner,

venting emotions appropriate to time and place.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling

absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only

when unavoidable circumstances exist

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Heart saver Certification preferred but not required.
  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and understand specific instructions is required.
  • Knowledge of safe body mechanics and the environment of the hospital are required.
  • Sufficient interpersonal skills to interact with staff and patients are required

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge preferred.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support preferred.
  • Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards
