The U.S. Travel Association is seeking a seasoned and strategic leader to serve as its Head of Government Affairs. This position will guide and elevate the association’s federal advocacy efforts while building and leading a high-performing, collaborative team. Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Government Affairs will be a key member of the senior leadership team, playing a pivotal part in shaping policy outcomes that support the travel industry and contributing to the broader organizational culture.
This individual must bring deep experience in federal policy and advocacy, a respected presence on Capitol Hill and a leadership style that fosters trust, mentorship and team development. The ideal candidate is both policy-savvy and people-focused—committed to delivering results while growing and empowering others.
What You'll Do
Lead and implement U.S. Travel’s government affairs strategy to advance the industry’s policy priorities at the federal level.
Serve as the organization’s primary representative to Congress, federal agencies and key advocacy partners.
Build, mentor and manage a government affairs team that is collaborative, results-oriented and aligned with organizational values.
Provide strategic counsel to the CEO and senior leadership on political dynamics and policy opportunities.
Partner cross-functionally and externally to build coalitions and execute integrated advocacy strategies.
Engage and mobilize U.S. Travel members in grassroots and direct advocacy efforts, reinforcing the value of the association’s work.
Monitor and respond to federal legislative and regulatory developments with agility and foresight, providing rapid counsel when needed.
Represent U.S. Travel at relevant hearings, briefings, coalitions and external events.
Serve as the organization’s registered federal lobbyist (if applicable).
What You Bring
Significant experience (15+ years) in federal government affairs, ideally within travel, tourism, transportation or related sectors.
Established relationships and credibility on Capitol Hill and with relevant agencies.
Demonstrated success as a people-first leader—someone who builds trust, empowers teams and creates a collaborative, values-driven culture.
Excellent communicator with the ability to translate complex policy into clear, persuasive messaging.
Proactive, strategic thinker with strong political instincts and sound judgment.
Comfortable operating at the executive level and partnering with a CEO and board.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in public policy, law or related field preferred.

This position is based in Washington, D.C.
U.S. Travel staff work in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.

Salary range: 425-525K
