Wow - this is nuts. Major funny businesses from the BLS in the July Employment Situation Summary released this morning. I've posted a few times about how they often revise previous months' numbers in small print at the bottom of the reports. Today's is one of the worst I've seen: - May’s job growth was reduced from 144,000 to ONLY 19,000 - June’s job growth was revised down from 147,000 to ONLY 14,000 In other words, over the past two months, the BLS report inflated the number of jobs added by 258K. Only 33,000 jobs were added - not the 291,000 they claimed. This is awful. Hopefully, it gets the press it deserves... See the full report linked in the comments. July's numbers show that we added 73,000 jobs (vs. an expected 100,000), but who knows if that's even close to accurate.
This is wild, Pete Newsome. Those kinds of swings don’t just distort the narrative; they mess with real planning and hiring decisions. Thanks for spotlighting it.
That's a drastic change, just goes to show how loose these numbers can be I guess.
