🎉 We’ve taken another step toward innovation and decarbonization in the offshore environment. 🚢🌊 We’ve partnered with Norwegian company Eld Energy to develop and test a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) on one of our FPSOs. This initiative marks the first real application of this technology on an offshore unit anywhere in the world. 🤩 🔋 SOFCs generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction between a fuel gas — produced by the unit itself — and oxygen from the air. With no combustion, they offer high energy efficiency and have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional gas turbine systems. Working on a principle similar to batteries, the goal is to use this energy directly in FPSO operations, replacing part of the conventional gas-based power generation. 🎯 Following the successful completion of Phase 1 — lab tests using simulated gas — we are now moving into Phase 2, which includes the development, construction, and offshore installation of a 40 kW pilot unit. The system is expected to go live in 2026, with the potential to transform offshore power generation, reduce emissions, and support MODEC’s decarbonization strategy. 📢 “We know there are still technical challenges ahead, but we remain firmly committed to innovation and to finding solutions that deliver stable energy with low GHG emissions,” said Koichi Matsumiya, Executive Officer at MODEC. 🇰🇷 🛠 Hanwha Engine and WinGD announce first production of variable-compression dual-fuel engine for lng carriers Hanwha Group Engine produced the world’s first dual-fuel X-DF engine with variable compression ratio (VCR) technology for LNG carriers, a unit capable of operating on both LNG and diesel and engineered with WinGD Ltd.’s low-emissions engine technology, according to the company's release. The company held a joint ceremony with engine designer WinGD on August 29 at Hanwha Engine’s headquarters in Changwon, South Korea, where it announced the first shipment of the 5X72DF-2.2 engine with VCR technology. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗦$𝟱.𝟮 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Mitsubishi Power and Taiwan’s CTCI have signed a US$5.2bn contract to deliver a new 2,800MW gas turbine combined cycle plant at Tung Hsiao Power Plant in Miaoli County. The project will add five units with M501JAC gas turbines, coming online from 2030–2031, and aims to boost capacity while cutting environmental impact. 🔗 Link in the comments
