Hanwha Engine delivers first VCR engine for LNG carriers Hanwha Engine, a subsidiary of Hanwha Ocean, has built what it calls the world’s first variable compression ratio (VCR) dual-fuel engine for an LNG carrier. The WinGD-designed 5X72DF-2.2 engine uses VCR technology to adjust compression ratios in real time, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Hanwha said the system can cut methane slip during gas operation by 30–50% compared with existing technologies. The first engine will be installed on an LNG carrier under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries for QatarEnergy’s North Field expansion project, which aims to double the nation’s LNG production capacity by 2026. Don't forget to register for Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference, Europe, which will take place at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, 30 September–1 October 2025. #LNG #Shipping #Decarbonisation #MethaneSlip #MaritimeTechnology
