Software demos misusing AI terms, beware of ML vs GenAI vs AgenticAI

I clearly articulate how enterprise technology impacts a business

Software demos are killing me. Sorry Microsoft but you seem to be the worst at this right now. It bugs me when people broadly say AI while they're actually showing a 15 year old ML algorithm at work. But I just watched a guy demo a use case inside Dynamics where it summarized text and the dude called it agentic. It was not autonomous, it involved no orchestration, it made no decisions, it was not monitored. If you're evaluating software right now, you absolutely NEED to make sure you have someone in the room who understands the value difference between ML, GenAI and AgenticAI.

What Dynamics 365 app was it? Would love to get a link to the video/demo.

I think the issue is how broad (and misunderstood) AI actually is. ML is a subset of AI, like even really primitive AI in video game characters.

Totally agree! Too often I see requests for “GenAI” that are really solved by a simple ML thats been around for years. The focus shouldn’t be on buzzwords–it should be on value, whether that comes from a basic workflow or an advanced GenAI solution. Knowing the difference on the two makes a world of difference when evaluating software.

I would love for a company to walk in and say. "This portion is just ML and see what it does. . . . Now we layer on AI and here is the difference. Agentic will do this. . . "

Who cares if it’s ML, agentic AI, GenAI, or good old fashioned algorithms. What you should care about is the outcomes the software can achieve for your business, price point, and required change management. However, I agree it’s frustrating when sales guys and gals don’t get it and just spam buzz words.

You must have been doing some covert competitor intelligence.

With trillions pouring into the industry, everyone is trying to get on the bandwagon. It's a fascinating tool, but it is still just a tool. I totally understand the desire to describe any black box as agentic, but the details certainly do matter as you explained.

Sometimes it’s the sales approach that is not adjusted… if you’re demonstrating a product without working backwards from trying to solve a problem , this may happen. GenAI, agenticAI are often used to accelerate problem solving. Not surprised!

Anything done with an algorithm is called AI. Even simple statistics. It's like there's a corollary to Clarke's Third Law* that says anything that's not obvious was done with AI This was true even before LLMs were a thing. *Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
