CODEPENDENCE ~Aiming Harmony Rural is backward? No. Urban is exploitative? No. The lack of harmony within the two creates disparity? Yes. The idea of "empowering rural" & "developing urban" is not stating one realm is superior to other but to facilitate a bridge, an exchange of cultural wisdom & technological advancement. “The mountains are calling and I must go.” But in architecture, this call is not for escape, it is for reverence. In our recent conversation with Rahul Bhushan, founder of NORTH, Himachal Pradesh, we explored how mountain architecture must fold into the landscape with humility, blending heritage, innovation, and environmental stewardship. From reviving Kathkuni techniques to shaping global dialogues on responsible building, NORTH exemplifies resilience rooted in tradition yet open to the future. I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest research in Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, a leading interdisciplinary journal focused on architecture, urban design and planning, and built-environment studies. This visual ethnographic work documents how Cairenes adapt residential balconies to meet everyday needs, using street-level mapping, photo documentation, and resident interviews across three contrasting contexts—informal, old urban, and new planned neighborhoods. It finds assertive, resident-led modifications alongside functional chores, passive observation, and festive personalization, revealing recurrent needs and calling for balcony designs that support multiple uses and incorporate resident input. I extend my sincere gratitude to my mentor, Dr.Ahmed Sherif, for his generous support throughout this project. 👉 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dMSMuFEb #ArchnetIJAR #Architecture #BuiltEnvironment #DesignResearch #Scholarship
