Excited to gain insights from Dr. Jon Tore Lieng, Managing Director of Deep Sea Anchors AS, as he delves into the world of Dynamically Installed Anchors for offshore floating wind turbines. Floating wind turbines, a recent innovation, are mounted on floating structures, anchored instead of being fixed directly to the seabed. The pioneering HiPR-Wind floating wind farm in Scotland (2015) set the stage for larger projects. Future endeavors aim to harness deeper waters, overcome challenges, and increase the number of wind turbines for enhanced energy production. #RenewableEnergy #Innovation #OffshoreWindTurbines https://lnkd.in/dKGT-r_g

The large wind turbines that could make up the 500MW Stoura floating offshore wind farm around 30 miles to the east of Shetland would be visible from shore on clear days. The team behind the project, driven forward by Irish energy company ESB, was in Shetland this week to speak to stakeholders, community representatives and also hosted an exhibition in the Voe hall on Thursday. Project manager Cian Desmond said the company was working towards submitting a consent application by 2028/29. In the time between now and that target date, the company hopes to be able to engage with the public to identify a suitable location in the wider Sullom Voe area for the wind farm’s cable landfall and the construction of a substation. Three floating wind turbines have now been installed in the Gulf of Lion in the French Occitanie region, where high-wind areas that were ‘previously out of reach’ can now be tapped. Assembled at the Port-La Nouvelle and towed 16 kilometres offshore, the turbines make up the Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL) project, which comprises three 10MW turbines. Project owner Ocean Winds has developed the site in partnership with funding from Banque des Territoires, and they say it is a ‘nature-inclusive’ wind farm with artificial marine habitats installed at sea. The installation follows five years Ocean Winds’ 25MW WindFloat Atlantic project in Portugal. Jeremy de Barbarin, EFGL Project director, said: “Every phase of EFGL, from design to offshore installation, has been a collective achievement involving local partners, maritime experts and global innovators. With the turbines now installed, we are looking forward to delivering clean energy and setting a precedent for the next generation of floating wind projects.” Floating wind is becoming more popular in many countries because it can be installed in very deep waters. Spain, for example, has no fixed-bottom offshore wind farms because of the steep drop off its continental shelf, and the country is investigating floating options. France’s first one was the Provence Grand Large, which also comprises three turbines, set 900 metres apart so that most marine traffic can navigate through. “The success of EFGL demonstrates floating wind’s readiness to scale, both in France and internationally, contributing to the global acceleration of offshore wind energy,” said Jérémy de Barbarin. 🔊 Gareth Chetwynd, from Recharge, spoke with Aaron Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Principle Power, about what it means to have delivered 1 TWh energy from WindFloat® projects, the completion of offshore installation phase of the LES EOLIENNES FLOTTANTES DU GOLFE DU LION (EFGL) project, and how these milestones set the stage for the commercial scale floating wind projects featuring the next generation of 15+ MW turbines. In the interview, Aaron highlights that "as our industry advances towards bigger projects and larger wind turbines, then you need to have a very optimized coupled system, as Capex, Opex, and performance matter so much to making these commercial project business cases work." "To perform this system level optimization, you have to be sharp on your modelling - and it’s only possible to do this safely if the tools are backed by real-world data." He explains further that "our improved understanding of the loading environment and the structural requirements unlocks scope for real gains toward industrialization and optimization of fabrication, and that’s critically important."
