Friends, We are adding a new feature in MycoAsia Journal of Modern Mycology. Along with the scientific abstracts, every paper will now carry a public-friendly abstract—written in plain language and powered by Google Gemini. The idea is simple: take mycology out of expert silos and make it understandable to students, journalists, policymakers, and the general public. This is one step toward making MycoAsia not just a journal but a bridge between science and society.

In my latest research with Prof. Michael Briguglio and Jorge Bermudez, we explore the transformation of #Marsascala, a coastal town in #Malta, through the lens of Young’s (1983) model of touristification and landscape change, which identifies six stages of development. Our findings reveal that population growth—driven by #tourism and foreign labour—has fuelled overdevelopment, infrastructural strain, and a decline in residents’ quality of life. We argue that Marsascala has already gone through all six of Young’s proposed stages. Building on this, we introduce a seventh stage: "real estateisation"—where speculative real estate development and the rise of short-term rentals reshape coastal localities in ways that extend beyond tourism. Marsascala thus becomes a case study of the complex interplay between tourism, migration, housing, and urban change. 👉 Read the paper published in Open Research Europe here: https://lnkd.in/eQMJjmgS

Today I participated in a very interesting workshop at VINNOVA - the first roundtable session on the new Swedish roadmap for advanced materials. My overall impression is that researchers and industry have a very similar view of how we want to work and collaborate and what obstacles we see for Sweden to succeed. Researchers, industry and policy makers need to meet and discuss how to create a long term scientifically fruitful climate for research and development. A meeting where performers and stakeholders can meet to discuss science and collaborative methods for the benefit of Swedish industry - a scientific Almedalen.

"Science may be global, but innovation is local", writes Goda Naujokaityte at Science|Business in a news article covering my recent paper on the geography of public R&D funding in Europe. In the article, we talk about why public R&D funding is concentrating in core regions, why that risks creating distrust in the science system, and what European policymakers should do about it. In R&D, three types of bias often undermine early-stage research: sampling bias, familiarity bias, and positivity bias. Left unchecked, these biases can distort research findings, slow progress and even contribute to higher R&D failure rates. What countermeasures can help minimize these biases and detect them early, before they compromise research outcomes? See what our Director of Scientific Affairs Stavroula Ntoufa recommends in this article: https://hubs.la/Q03Ht74b0

📢 Excited to share that the international scientific glossary OPINION Glossary: Integrating theory and methods for automatically analyzing opinionated communication has just been published! This collaborative work of more than 30 researchers from 13 countries brings together over 140 entries, offering definitions and conceptual insights into the study of opinions and their discursive expression. I am honored to have contributed as one of the editors, alongside Gabriella Szabó (Hungary), Carlos Cunha (Portugal), and Jūratė Ruzaite (Lithuania), within the framework of the COST Action OPINION network. 🔗 You can access the Glossary here: https://lnkd.in/dv8VjDnB
