Many thanks to the Global Biodata Coalition for the invitation to share Addgene’s experience and lessons in sustaining biodata. Funding is necessary — but not sufficient — for biodata sustainability. Sustainable data ecosystems are built by pairing investment with the right services, access models, and technological innovations to meet real-world needs. • Sustainability grows when biodata underpins tools and services that people value and rely on. • Community-driven value creation is key: the full potential of biodata emerges when the community can access, contribute and reuse biodata. • Access models and legal frameworks should not only support long-term stewardship but protect the integrity of biodata collections while ensuring access—and value—for users. • Infrastructure that leverages emerging technology should not only scale reach and quality but do so responsibly and in the best interests of the community it serves. The uncertainty surrounding US federal funding, the emergence of unethical AI solutions, and the ever-growing volume of biological data are piling pressure on core biodata resources worldwide 🌎. Just as the lights go on, there is a risk of taking such infrastructure for granted and forgetting its absolute contribution to powering the scientific endeavour. After all, intellectual progress can only be understood in the light of discoveries that have come before, and such resources ensure the continuity of scientific advancement 💡. Last week in Montreal 🇨🇦, I joined the Global Biodata Coalition Sustainability Lab to explore various strategies for addressing current funding challenges while preserving the fundamental principles of #opendata.
