At IAA MOBILITY 2025, one of the things to follow is how Chinese automakers are using the event. This year, BYD, XPENG, Leapmotor, and GAC MOTOR are showing up with clear strategies. They are treating IAA as a market-entry platform designed to build credibility, attract partners, and accelerate their position in Europe’s EV ecosystem. BYD is presenting the SEAL 6 DM-i and highlighting its charging network ambitions. XPeng is framing itself as a tech leader with an AI-powered mobility showcase. Leapmotor, backed by Stellantis, is debuting the B10 SUV alongside its strategy for affordability and scale. And GAC is unveiling the AION lineup while emphasizing connected services and platforms. For the Chinese brands, IAA certainly goes beyond branding. They link into broader themes: ecosystem integration, scale, and market credibility. It is to be seen if longer term they will extract real strategic value from IAA.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung says the South Korean auto empire’s three brands, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, must leap ahead with breakthrough technologies while keeping their focus on real-life customer needs. The manufacturer’s snowballing success is one reason the third-generation leader was tapped to receive, on behalf of the house of Chung, the Automotive News Centennial Award, recognizing the founding family’s contributions to the global industry over more than half a century. Euisun Chung, 54, reflected on his priorities at the helm and on the dynasty’s legacy in written responses to a range of questions from Asia Editor Hans Greimel. Chung, who assumed leadership of the auto group in 2020, discusses the teachings of his forefathers, his plans for software and artificial intelligence, strategies for corporate alliances and the vision for the company’s future, as well as his thoughts about favorite cars and the industry’s iconic leaders. Here are edited excerpts. What technological breakthrough will most transform the industry in the next 25 years? I think one key factor that will define the next 25 years of mobility is the fusion of software-defined vehicles and artificial intelligence technologies. We’re entering an era that will see a shift from horsepower to processing power. It’s not just about how cars drive. It’s about how they think, learn and evolve. Instead of building a car and updating it every few years, we’re creating a platform that improves constantly — just like your smartphone. While electrification has redefined powertrains, software is redefining the entire value chain — from product development and vehicle architecture to user interactions and our business models. That’s why we’re investing heavily in new vehicle technology, like our new zonal electric/electronic architecture and high-performance computing platforms that are built for this software-first world.
