Theory of Constraints: Fixing the Real Bottlenecks in Your Organization In organizations, everyday setbacks often come down to one thing: the constraint—the weakest link that limits performance. Theory of Constraints (TOC) teaches us to spot that bottleneck, focus our efforts there, and continuously improve the whole system. How TOC helps tackle everyday challenges: • Identify the real problem — instead of patching dozens of issues, find the root constraint that’s slowing everything down. • Focus efforts smartly — apply the Five Focusing Steps—identify, exploit, subordinate, elevate, and then repeat—to solve challenges at their source. • Align the system — bring all parts of your process into sync with the constraint—like setting the pace to match the slowest beat. • Drive continuous improvement — once one constraint is resolved, find the next. TOC teaches that solving problems is an ongoing commitment, not a one-off fix. In short, TOC isn’t just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about boosting performance by fixing what matters most. A young girl asks her mum, “Why do we cut a chicken at both ends before putting it in the oven?” Mum says, “That’s how we’ve always done it, let’s ask grandma.” Grandma doesn’t know either, so they ask great grandma. Her answer? “Before the war our oven was so small that a whole chicken would not fit unless we cut both ends.” What once made perfect sense had become a pointless tradition, carried on simply because no one stopped to question it. This happens in business too. Old rules and outdated policies live on, quietly slowing us down and hurting performance. In my latest blog post in the series The 20 Principles That Make the Theory of Constraints Work, I explain why Policy is a Virtual Obstacle and how removing the wrong ones can free up enormous capacity overnight. Systems Archetypes: Why Problems Keep Repeating Have you ever solved a problem, only to watch it return a few months later? You’re likely caught in a systems archetype a recurring feedback pattern that causes the same issues to cycle again and again. These classic structures include: 1. Fixes That Fail 2. Shifting the Burden 3. Limits to Growth 4. Success to the Successful Recognizing these isn’t just academic it’s practical power. It helps you design better interventions, spot early failure signals, and avoid wasted effort. What pattern do you see over and over in your industry or team? #SystemsThinking #SystemsArchetypes #RootCause #ProblemSolving #ComplexityScience #SystemsEngineering

Your logic model answers 'what will we do?' Your theory of change answers 'why will it work This is why you also need both. ➔A Theory of Change maps out the big picture. It shows how and why change is expected to happen. It’s your project’s strategic blueprint, grounded in assumptions and context. ➔A Logic Model focuses on the details. It breaksdown inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes into actionable steps. It’s your project’s operational roadmap. Together, they ensure your programme is both visionary and actionable. Scroll through this guide for more information, and attend the Theory of Change webinar in September. As usual spots are limited so secure yours NOW! https://lnkd.in/eszvBaWh #LogicModel #TheoryOfChange
