A young girl asks her mum, “Why do we cut a chicken at both ends before putting it in the oven?” Mum says, “That’s how we’ve always done it, let’s ask grandma.” Grandma doesn’t know either, so they ask great grandma. Her answer? “Before the war our oven was so small that a whole chicken would not fit unless we cut both ends.” What once made perfect sense had become a pointless tradition, carried on simply because no one stopped to question it. This happens in business too. Old rules and outdated policies live on, quietly slowing us down and hurting performance. In my latest blog post in the series The 20 Principles That Make the Theory of Constraints Work, I explain why Policy is a Virtual Obstacle and how removing the wrong ones can free up enormous capacity overnight. Theory of Constraints: Fixing the Real Bottlenecks in Your Organization In organizations, everyday setbacks often come down to one thing: the constraint—the weakest link that limits performance. Theory of Constraints (TOC) teaches us to spot that bottleneck, focus our efforts there, and continuously improve the whole system. How TOC helps tackle everyday challenges: • Identify the real problem — instead of patching dozens of issues, find the root constraint that’s slowing everything down. • Focus efforts smartly — apply the Five Focusing Steps—identify, exploit, subordinate, elevate, and then repeat—to solve challenges at their source. • Align the system — bring all parts of your process into sync with the constraint—like setting the pace to match the slowest beat. • Drive continuous improvement — once one constraint is resolved, find the next. TOC teaches that solving problems is an ongoing commitment, not a one-off fix. In short, TOC isn’t just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about boosting performance by fixing what matters most. Most life sciences teams describe the same daily reality: busy teams, constant reporting, “continuous improvement” programs — yet the same problems reappear. The reason? Most operational problems aren’t problems in themselves. They’re symptoms of deeper systemic issues. HSLD Operational Excellence moves past the noise. With driver trees and test/learn/execute cycles, we find the true constraints — and shift them with precision. When you stop treating symptoms and start reshaping systems, improvements don’t just last. They multiply. ✨ Simplify. Secure. Accelerate. That’s what operational excellence looks like when it sticks.

🔑 Key Lessons for Researchers & PhD Students In academia, time, deadlines, and distractions often push us toward “quick publications.” But lasting impact comes from finding your research spirit and building systems that sustain deep, meaningful work. 🎯 Key Takeaways: 1. Find your spirit: Don’t just chase deadlines—discover the topic or industry problem that energises you. That spark can define your career. 2. Engage with industry: Step outside the ivory tower. Interviews, trade expos, and industry presentations build trust and unlock data you’d never get otherwise. 3. Deep work matters: Protect “maker days” for focused research. Use tools (noise-cancelling headphones, NaturalReader, Grammarly, Workflowy) to stay in flow (these ideas were ahead of our time 6 years ago ;). 4. Work in roles, not isolation: Researchers thrive when they know whether they’re a storyteller, analyst, or data person, and then collaborate with others to fill the gaps. 5. Hack your systems: Outline clearly, map reviewer comments in tables, and don’t fear outsourcing small tasks to free up your time for higher-value work. 6. Stay resilient: Rejections, missed contracts, or dead-ends aren’t the end. They’re part of the journey to building credibility, impact, and a research identity. 👉 The biggest takeaway? Don’t let institutions box you in. Follow your curiosity, collaborate smartly, and align research with real-world challenges. La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University Dr Esin Ozdil Keith B. Your logic model answers 'what will we do?' Your theory of change answers 'why will it work This is why you also need both. ➔A Theory of Change maps out the big picture. It shows how and why change is expected to happen. It’s your project’s strategic blueprint, grounded in assumptions and context. ➔A Logic Model focuses on the details. It breaksdown inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes into actionable steps. It’s your project’s operational roadmap. Together, they ensure your programme is both visionary and actionable. Scroll through this guide for more information, and attend the Theory of Change webinar in September.
