The Chicago Quantum Exchange is excited to share that our cross-sector team #QuantumConnected is a finalist in the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Regional Innovation Engines program competition! 🎉 The CQE-led Quantum Connected is working to secure the nation’s information with cutting-edge #quantum technologies. We’re one of 15 teams who will pitch the NSF on the different proposed projects, with winners anticipated to be announced in early 2026. “Quantum technology is our best long-term bet for securing our nation’s information, which faces escalating threats that classical technology is not equipped to address,” said David Awschalom, the University of Chicago’s Liew Family professor of molecular engineering, the director of the CQE, senior scientist Argonne National Laboratory, and Quantum Connected principal investigator. Special thanks to all of our academic, industry, nonprofit, and government partners who are part of the Midwest quantum ecosystem and help make this work possible! As computing shifts from centralised clouds to distributed edge-to-cloud infrastructures, deciding where to place each service component becomes a strategic challenge, particularly when the components exist in multiple versions delivered by different providers, each with distinct performance and reliability trade-offs. Our recently published work addresses this challenge as a multi-objective optimisation problem and introduces a hybrid approach that combines the rapid convergence of Particle Swarm Optimisation with the deeper exploration of Genetic Algorithms to achieve high-quality service placement solutions within suitable runtimes. The Double Slit Experiment - MIT's Fresh Test & History To really understand one of the cornerstones of quantum technology, how light travels in particles and waves, one needs to follow the over 200 years of experimentation right up to Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 2025 single atoms test. Fortunately there's a brief way to get up to speed through today's Quantum's Business substack. https://lnkd.in/gzK_cQ96 I'm most interested in the intersection of business and quantum technologies but every once in a while, it's good to go under the covers endeavouring to understand how #quantumphysics actually works. I want to share our latest research article at the open-access Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams American Physical Society: When colliding high-intensity high-charge electron beams attract instead of repel! https://lnkd.in/dtPNiNt6 What happens when two ultra-relativistic electron beams collide? You might expect them to repel and fly apart. But in extreme high-intensity, high-charge conditions, the beams can actually pinch together. This counter‑intuitive effect is driven by intense coherent pair production, which changes the beams’ self-fields and reverses the Lorentz force. This results in a dramatic compression, boosted luminosity, and amplified fields far beyond what has been previously predicted.

🌍 Excellent science, made in Europe: Stephanie Wehner, this year’s winner of the Körber European Science Prize, explains how she is building the internet of the future – the quantum internet. 🎥 Watch the film now! The German physicist and computer scientist is professor at QuTech, Delft University of Technology, and Director of the Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA), a consortium of more than 40 European institutions. Her breakthrough: #QNodeOS, the world’s first operating system for quantum networks, which allows quantum computers with very different hardware architectures to be connected and programmed. “To me, the most fascinating aspect is that we send a new kind of information, quantum information, and that will enable us to do things that are impossible on the regular internet”, says Wehner. With her pioneering work, Wehner has laid the foundation for applications ranging from unbreakable secure communication to entirely new forms of networked quantum technologies – innovations that could fundamentally transform the way we share and process information. 🏆 On 19 September she will receive the Körber European Science Prize, worth €1 million, in Hamburg. 📷 Marcus Gloger / Körber-Stiftung #KoerberPrize #GesellschaftBesserMachen

Phasecraft has raised $34M in Series B funding to bring quantum computing closer to solving industrial problems. Founded by Ashley Montanaro, Toby Cubitt, and John Morton, the company develops hardware-agnostic algorithms that already work with partners like Google, IBM, and Quantinuum. Phasecraft’s software enables today’s noisy quantum devices to tackle complex tasks in materials science, energy networks, and drug discovery. The round was co-led by Plural, Playground Global, and Novo Holdings, with support from AlbionVC, Latitude, and Parkwalk Advisors — bringing total funding to over $50M. With teams in Bristol, London, and Washington D.C., Phasecraft is positioning itself as a bridge between quantum theory and real-world applications. The #quantum industry's growth depends on a strong pipeline of talent. But how can we best balance the goals of academia and industry? In this short snippet from our fireside chat, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Prof. Will Oliver discusses the necessary balance between university research and industry needs. He touches on the importance of well-funded, relevant research and the challenges that arise around intellectual property. This is just one of the many critical topics he covered. Missed the live?
