Sustainability Takes Centre Stage! The HKU Architecture Gallery recently showcased the innovative exhibition "Bricking Up with Carbon," featuring remarkable projects by our graduating architecture students. This exhibition tackles the pressing issue of construction waste, which constitutes a staggering 70% of Hong Kong's total waste. Visitors were invited to engage hands-on with sustainable design by creating configurable furniture from recycled materials, demonstrating that sustainability starts with what we already have. This exhibition not only highlights the creative talents of our students but also sparks important conversations about responsible design and material reuse. Researchers at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), working with industry partners, have created an innovative hook-and-loop fastening system for buildings. The solution makes it possible to connect components securely, while still allowing them to be separated and reused when needed. This approach saves time, reduces construction waste, and supports a more circular building economy. By revisiting traditional practices, #Architecture can help create a more sustainable future. For centuries, communities relied on bioregional design — using locally available, #Sustainable materials and techniques that worked with the environment, not against it. Today, this approach is making a comeback. Examples from #Mexico, #Canada and #Rwanda show how bioregional design can deliver buildings that are regenerative, inclusive, and resilient. The World Economic Forum’s Davos Baukultur Alliance is championing this approach as a tool for #Architects and planners to design the #CitiesOfTheFuture — ones that balance cultural heritage with modern sustainability needs. #UrbanDevelopment #Resilience #ClimateAction #Innovation

JKMM Architects’ winning design for Helsinki’s new Museum of Architecture and Design, titled “Kumma,” is a landmark waterfront project selected from 624 global entries for its sculptural use of recycled brick, sustainable low-lying form, and strong civic presence in the city’s South Harbour. Scheduled to open in 2030, the 10,050-square-meter museum will unite Finland’s major design institutions, housing a collection of over 900,000 artifacts with a guiding principle of ecological and cultural sustainability. The jury praised Kumma for blending seamlessly into the historic harbor context while offering a distinctive new public space, balancing monumentality and approachability as a model for responsible, climate-smart architecture. #architecture #finnisharchitecture #architecturenews #museumdesign #designnews

Sustainable Architecture: Building with Soil The Philippines Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia presents Soil-beings (Lamánlupa), featuring the immersive Terrarium installation by Christian Tenefrancia Illi. Made from nearly a thousand soil tiles collected across the Philippines, it invites visitors to experience soil as a living, active participant of the building process. The exhibition challenges conventional architecture, asking how we can build with the Earth, not just upon it, fostering a more reciprocal relationship with our planet. In today’s era of sustainable design, adaptive reuse is no longer just an architectural trend , it’s becoming a necessity. By repurposing old, underutilized buildings, we’re not only preserving history but also creating innovative spaces that serve modern needs. Adaptive reuse transforms yesterday’s structures into tomorrow’s opportunities: • Reduces construction waste & carbon footprint • Revitalizes neglected urban areas • Preserves cultural & architectural heritage • Creates unique spaces with character and story A powerful example is the Tate Modern in London. Once a disused power station, it was reimagined as one of the world’s most visited art museums. The result? ✅ A landmark that blends industrial history with modern design ✅ A cultural hub driving community engagement ✅ Proof that adaptive reuse adds economic, social, and environmental value I’d love to hear from fellow designers and architects 💬 Have you worked on or been inspired by an adaptive reuse project? What challenges or opportunities did you see? #AdaptiveReuse #SustainableDesign #InteriorDesign #Architecture #UrbanRegeneration #FutureOfDesign #CircularEconomy #DesignInnovation
