Very proud of the Resource Recovery and Efficiency team and Talis Consultants Jonathan Beckett for delivering Council’s new 10-Year Waste Strategy. Through workshops and strong collaboration, we have shaped a plan tailored to our council and community. We are especially proud to have built a strategy that includes practical implementation actions through a 5-year Implementation Plan. It sets a clear path forward by focusing on reducing landfill, improving resource recovery, shifting to a circular economy, and tackling waste emissions (which made up 62% of Council’s carbon footprint in FY22). As part of our Brew a Better Aotearoa sustainability and responsibility strategy, we have been working on several major water-recovery projects over the last few years. This month, we finished installing a shiny new water reclamation system that is set to be a game-changer for water conservation and operational efficiency at our Waitematā brewery, and represents a major sustainability milestone for us this year. Thermal imbalances during pasteuriser start-ups, shutdowns, or stoppages can lead to significant volumes of heated water being discharged to trade waste. Our new system captures, cools, and reuses this water. Stay tuned for updates on how much water we save!
