Industrial protocols often feel like another language to me. They come up in almost every conversation I have with controls engineers, yet I’ve mostly been able to nod along confidently and say: “Yes, the Cognex DataMan can handle that, TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, SLMP…” The exception? EtherCAT. Traditionally, making a Cognex camera speak EtherCAT has meant adding an Anybus gateway or similar device. Adding complexity, extra cost, and in my opinion a disjointed solution. However, This week, I’ve been hands-on with the Cognex DataMan 280 EtherCAT model. For the first time, I could plug directly into a Beckhoff PLC and communicate over EtherCAT without an external gateway. For my customer, that’s a genuine game-changer: simpler integration, fewer parts, and more efficiency. It’s got me wondering… 🔹 Are we seeing a shift in the UK towards EtherCAT? 🔹 Or will Profinet (Siemens) and Ethernet/IP (Allen-Bradley) continue to dominate the UK market?
