🔎 Are Fire Strategy Reports really “strategic”? Or just compliance documents in disguise? In most projects, Fire Strategy Reports look eerily similar across concept, schematic, and detailed design stages. The content barely changes. The so-called strategy usually boils down to: ✔️ Repeating the AHJ-adopted codes. ✔️ Flagging non-compliances. ✔️ Proposing alternate equivalent solutions. Important? Yes. Strategic? Hardly. We forget two critical truths: 1️⃣ Construction is just a blink in a building’s life. Yet reports are written only for designers, AHJs, and contractors — not for operators or end users who will live with the building for decades. 2️⃣ Strategy should evolve with design. Concept stage should set the philosophy. Schematic should show system-level strategies. Detailed design should validate integration and performance. Instead, most reports recycle the same template three times. A real Fire Strategy Report should be a roadmap for holistic fire safety — guiding not only design and construction, but also operations, change management, refurbishment, and long-term resilience. Until we start writing reports with that intent, are we really serving the industry? Why do construction teams seem to prefer fighting fires to installing sprinklers? Had a conversation last week with a commercial director who’d been putting off implementing a margin improvement process we’d mapped out months earlier. “We’ve been too busy dealing with urgent variations to set up the system that would prevent urgent variations.” I had to admire the logic. Perfectly circular, completely mad. Here’s what I’ve noticed over years of watching construction teams: we’re brilliant at doing the familiar stuff. You know, processing applications, chasing payments, updating programmes. Known effort, predictable outcome - box ticked. But ask us to change how we actually work? That’s a different story entirely. It’s not about capability, these are smart people running complex projects. I think it’s more to do with emotional energy. Making decisions about new processes feels risky and draining. Running the same old workflows feels safe and automatic. I’ve watched teams merrily burn 200 hours on repetitive admin rather than spend 20 hours designing a better system. Not because they can’t see the logic, but because choosing feels harder than just doing. The irony is that the most valuable work any construction leader does isn’t actually executing the task. It’s deciding which tasks are worth executing in the first place. So here’s my question: what’s the one process your team keeps complaining about but never actually fixes?
