The United Nations will be establishing two new mechanisms to promote international cooperation on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI). The two mechanisms are: (a) an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and (b) the Global Dialogue on AI Governance. Thanks to David R. Hardoon for pointing us to this United Nations development, in response to the rapid evolution of AI and the need for a common understanding of its capabilities, risks, and opportunities. https://lnkd.in/gb8G2znU

The United Nations just made a bold move on AI governance. The General Assembly has released a draft proposing the establishment of two new institutions to strengthen international cooperation on AI: 👉A global dialogue on AI governance 👉An independent scientific panel on AI Why it matters: These mechanisms are designed to anticipate risks, set standards, and ensure AI serves humanity – not the other way around. This move follows the release of the report “Governance of the Transition to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): Urgent Considerations for the UN General Assembly” by the High-Level Expert Panel on AGI, convened by the UN Council of Presidents of the General Assembly (UNCPGA). A panel, chaired by Jerome Glenn, CEO of The Millennium Project, including Renan Araujo, Yoshua Bengio, Joon Ho Kwak, @Lan Xue, Stuart Russell, @Jaan Tallinn, Mariana Todorova, and José Jaime Villalobos. 🌍🤖 Exciting to revisit the OECD AI Principles, one of the most influential global frameworks guiding responsible AI development and adoption. As organizations and governments accelerate AI innovation, these principles remain just as critical today as when they were introduced: ✅ Inclusive growth and well-being ✅ Human-centered values and fairness ✅ Transparency and explainability ✅ Robustness, security, and safety ✅ Accountability at every stage What stands out to me is their balance of innovation with trust—recognizing that AI can be a powerful engine for progress only if it’s developed and deployed responsibly. As leaders, practitioners, and policymakers, we have an opportunity (and responsibility) to embed these values into how we design, scale, and govern AI systems. 🔗 You can explore the full set of principles here: OECD AI Principles https://lnkd.in/eZsJh_JJ #AI #ResponsibleAI #EthicalAI #OECD #DigitalTransformation #AscendBusinessAdvisors #AscendBusinessAdvisorsLLC

On August 26, 2025, an AI wrongful death lawsuit was filed after the tragic suicide of a 16-year-old. It was alleged that ChatGPT encouraged and assisted in the suicide. (Link to the analysis by Tech Policy: https://lnkd.in/grAcP237) The landscape on AI Governance has also continued to evolve dramatically with the UN General Assembly establishing two new mechanisms to promote international cooperation on the governance of artificial intelligence (#AI) following several months of negotiations on 26 August 2025. The establishment of the United Nations Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance mark a significant milestone in global efforts to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while addressing its risks. The Global Dialogue on AI Governance provides a platform within the United Nations for stakeholders to discuss the critical issues concerning AI facing humanity with the Scientific Panel on AI serving as a crucial bridge between cutting-edge AI research and policymaking. Let’s trust these new global mechanisms will provide independent scientific assessments and assist our international community to anticipate emerging challenges and make informed decisions on this transformative technology and #AIGovernance. https://lnkd.in/gYydfTrT

Independent International Scientific Panel on AI is born In 2023, the United Nations launched the High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, a temporary group of global experts tasked with exploring how to govern AI responsibly. Their work culminated in the 2024 report " Governing AI for Humanity " (link in the first comment), which laid out a visionary framework for inclusive, distributed, and transparent AI governance. In 2025, the UN General Assembly took a decisive step forward by establishing the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI: 🔹 A permanent body of 40 experts with three-year mandates 🔹 Charged with synthesizing scientific evidence on AI risks and opportunities 🔹 Supporting governments in making informed decisions 🔹 Hosting an annual global dialogue, starting with Geneva in 2026 💡 What’s the key difference? The 2023 body was advisory and temporary, focused on shaping ideas. The 2025 panel is institutional and operational, built to implement and guide policy over time. This marks a shift from reflection to action. #AI #UnitedNations #Governance #TechPolicy #ArtificialIntelligence

🌍 How can we design #AI that truly creates value for everyone? The DECIDE project has just received €6.8M from the Dutch Research Agenda to make AI more fair, transparent, and democratic. With nearly 50 partners from science, policy, and practice, the project will run until 2032 and focus on giving citizens more influence over the decisions that affect their lives. As Oskar J. Gstrein explains: "It is crucial that we do not simply impose new technologies like AI onto society". 👉 Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eYHsmGgX

🌟 Excited to announce our 9th AI for policymaking MasterClass! 🌟 Join us on September 23rd as we delve into a vital topic: understanding and addressing biases in policymaking and the use of generative AI. As policymakers, it is crucial that we ensure our decisions are fair, inclusive, and do not reinforce existing inequalities. 💡 Why is this important? AI models often mirror the data they are trained on, meaning unexamined biases can lead to skewed analyses and policies that disproportionately impact certain groups. 🤝 We are thrilled to welcome experts from the Joint Research Centre to uncover how to detect and mitigate these biases and we’ll discuss real policy cases from the European Commission to gain practical insights on creating equitable and justified policies in the age of AI. Registrations are sill open in EU Learn: EU Learn - AI for Policymaking MasterClass - Session 9 #policymaking #AI # EuropeanCommission #JRC #biases *Session only available for EU institutions Staff*
