🌱 From Bali to the world: August highlights with Eco-Mantra 🌱 This month, our team shared insights on regenerative design and sustainable futures across Bali: ✨ At the Tropical Architecture Summer Class by IDB Bali, Hanif Shidki emphasized that tropical design must go beyond aesthetics, embracing resilience, culture, and climate realities. ✨ At Jiwa Garden, Heruanda Alviana reminded us that climate change is no longer distant; it’s here, urging us to design with the land, not against it. ✨ At BaleBio, Hanif Shidki revealed how Life Cycle Assessment shows regenerative design is possible today, with reclaimed materials leading the way. Together, these conversations remind us: regeneration is not theory, it’s practice, happening now. #Sustainability #RegenerativeDesign #ClimateAction #Architecture

Green roofs cut microplastics in rainfall by 97.5%, according to a new study from Tongji University. Shanghai alone, with 3.56 million square meter of rooftop greenery, could capture more than 56,000 kg of microplastics annually. We believe Africa can adapt innovative, nature-based solutions like this to build cleaner, more sustainable cities. The future of urban design isn’t just about structures, it’s about creating environments that heal the planet. 🌍✨ #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #Innovation #Atunlo

By revisiting traditional practices, #Architecture can help create a more sustainable future. For centuries, communities relied on bioregional design — using locally available, #Sustainable materials and techniques that worked with the environment, not against it. Today, this approach is making a comeback. Examples from #Mexico, #Canada and #Rwanda show how bioregional design can deliver buildings that are regenerative, inclusive, and resilient. The World Economic Forum’s Davos Baukultur Alliance is championing this approach as a tool for #Architects and planners to design the #CitiesOfTheFuture — ones that balance cultural heritage with modern sustainability needs. #UrbanDevelopment #Resilience #ClimateAction #Innovation

Can we plant bamboo? It is good for the community and helps combat climate change 🔎 Fact check: • Community benefits: Bamboo can provide raw materials, income opportunities, and green spaces for communities. • Climate change: Bamboo grows quickly, absorbs large amounts of CO₂, and helps reduce soil erosion, making it a nature-based solution for climate mitigation and adaptation.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲? At the recent FIND - Design Fair Asia Global Summit, Bernd Schernau, Associate Director for Landscape Architecture at Henning Larsen, shared his vision for “Building Everyday Sanctuaries in the City: Tropical Canopies.” He explored how thoughtful design can transform urban spaces into restorative sanctuaries, balancing climate comfort, emotional well-being and ecological richness. From kampung tents to modern POPS (Privately Owned Public Spaces), the evolution of tropical canopies is moving beyond simple protection. Future prototypes will be adaptive, regenerative and sensory-rich living systems that respond to sun, wind and human presence, while supporting biodiversity and wellness. Through innovative prototypes and regenerative strategies, they will dynamically respond to environmental and human needs, enhance sensory and therapeutic experiences, and support local ecosystems. By blending adaptive design, biophilic engagement, and ecological integration, these canopies aim to create resilient, restorative, and co-created urban spaces where people and nature thrive together. SUSTAINABILITY BEFORE SUSTAINABILITY Long before green buildings and zero-waste design became buzzwords, the villages of Pulga and Nakthan in Himachal Pradesh were already living those values. Their timber-and-stone Kath-Kuni homes were earthquake-resistant, climate-responsive, and part of a true circular economy. What modern architects chase today was once an instinct for survival.
