Older people are teaching younger individuals (like grandparents passing down traditions), and younger people sharing new perspectives, technology skills, or cultural trends with the older generations. He's back! We’re happy to welcome Lorenzo Fenocchio back to KTH. He (re)joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in August, now as industrial postdoc. His project ACCESS, Addressing Critical raw materials Challenges in Energy storage Systems, is a collaboration with Thermo-Calc Software. We asked Lorenzo a few questions about his new role and the project: You visited KTH as a PhD student last year – how does it feel to be back, this time as an industrial postdoc? 💬“My experience at KTH was extremely positive, so I am really happy to be back to work in such a vibrant and international environment. The project itself is of course fascinating, but the people I worked with in the past made me want to return.” Can you give us a short glimpse of what your project is about? 💬“The project tries to address fundamental sustainability issues in the battery industry by providing computational tools. By applying the CALPHAD method coupled with DFT we plan to support battery material development, significantly reducing the amount of costly and time and labour consuming experiments.” What do you hope this project can contribute to – both in research and in industry? 💬 “Faster development and lower environmental impact for new battery materials. Energy storage s a huge challenge ahead and Materials Science is for sure one of the main ways to win it. The project is supervised by Malin Selleby, Raquel Lizárraga at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Bartek Kaplan and Reza Naraghi from Thermo-calc Software. The project is funded by WISE – Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability.

How do you turn years of PhD research into a clear, engaging story for everyone? Lokesh Jain did it in just three minutes - and won the Three Minutes Thesis (3MT) 2025 competition at The University of Edinburgh! His talk, "Ice Mélange: The Cork in the Glacial Bottle" not only earned him first place, but also the People's Choice Award! 🎉 The 3MT challenges PhD researchers to present their work to a non-specialist audience, with just one slide and three minutes on the clock. It’s a real test of clarity, creativity, and communication. In this video, Lokesh - currently undertaking a PhD in Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences in the School of GeoSciences - reflects on his 3MT experience, the importance of science communication and the next steps. We also hear from his supervisor Dr Donald Slater, who supported and encouraged him throughout the competition. I’ve submitted my Master’s dissertation at the University of Cambridge and developed a strategic innovation readiness framework. The research explored why promising innovations stall before adoption. It reinforced that regulatory frameworks, supply chain capacity and market perceptions all play decisive roles. Technical validation alone is not enough. The framework is designed to support innovators, policymakers and industry. It adapts TRL (Technology Readiness Levels) and CRI (Commercial Readiness Indicator) and introduces four navigation zones to reflect the non-linear nature of innovation. Alongside the framework, I have identified five strategic levers, visibility, trust, capability, alignment and ownership, to guide interventions in the system and shape the actions needed to unlock adoption. The framework works in three steps: • Map the innovation on TRL and CRI (backing sheets available) • Review the system it sits in (regulation, supply chains, market context) • Act using the strategic levers to plan the journey The framework was developed through a case study of incinerator bottom ash aggregate (IBAA) as a supplementary cementitious material. It was user tested with a range of other low-carbon material innovations. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the surveys and interviews and helped shape both the framework and the findings. The research focused on low-carbon materials but the framework is sector-agnostic. It can be applied to individual innovations or used across portfolios in infrastructure, energy, manufacturing or beyond. The next steps are to progress the strategic actions identified for IBAA and develop a practical user guide that will broaden the framework’s impact. 👉 If you’re working on innovation adoption, circular economy or policy design, I’d welcome the chance to connect. Too often, young people are asked to confront climate doom with little more than “What are you going to do about it?” This paper explores how ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space are using storytelling to transform that narrative—shifting from anxiety to optimism, creativity, and agency.
