As expected, Origin Energy launches a V2G subscription with StarCharge.
From a directional perspective it's great to see what's (arguably) Australia's most forward-thinking and forward-executing Tier 1 retailer be first here, and similarly positive to see alignment with and credibility in StarCharge's Halo platform - it's capable of many good things and is being repurposed in many positive projects enabling V2G elsewhere (ask BMW!)
That we have a public-facing linkup between:
- A major Australian utility,
- China's most significant EVSE vendor, and
- China's largest new energy vehicle OEM,
Is a *massive* achievement which for which the volume and value of commercial and B2B work alone cannot be understated. Neither can its importance to the Australian market - this 'ripple in the pond' is right up there with BYD first determining to sell the Atto 3 in Australia.
Chau Le leads eMobility at Origin - has for some time now, during which there's been some really good wins - and is currently Chair of the board at the Electric Vehicle Council. That's a powerful platform from which to make good change for all.
So it's fair to talk around industry alignment and what could be; Origin currently has an ARENA-funded project leveraging OCPP 1.6J and Modbus (presently) to manage apartment charging, and Origin staff have posted here around offerings providing customers access to much of Australia's public vehicle charging infrastructure. These are directionally-laudable projects, however -
- OCPP 2.0.1 would have better aligned the ARENA project's goals, given a ready roadmap to OCPP 2.1 (supporting V2G securely) and aligned with StarCharge's existing - certified! - efforts in the space, and
- The same ISO 15118 PKI ecosystem securing V2G discharge in CCS charging also supports roaming - giving access to 100% of a market's public infrastructure through demoratized access where so employed.
Whilst OCPP isn't specifically required to manage V2G and whilst export is possible without marketwide-intent-or-specified cybersecurity, the importance of holistic, aligned technical leadership underpinning competitive commercial strategy remains. As is the potential for leading organisations to demonstrate how to best leverage best capabilities in market - whether Origin or the EVC alike - towards competitive markets, winning consumer outcomes and scaled opportunities through reduced access barriers.
Origin's partners StarCharge and GreenFlux are both Open Charge Alliance members with certified products - I hope Origin Energy joins too.
To more of this, and to leadership in better reconciling Australian EV charging experiences with global best practice. Australians deserve no less.

Today marks a significant step in the rollout of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging, with the announcement that Origin has joined forces with BYD Australia & New Zealand and StarCharge Energy Oceania Pty Ltd to trial Australia’s first EV subscription bundled with a bi-directional charger and access to free home EV charging.
V2G charging has the potential to turbocharge the EV market in Australia. This trial will help with understanding the impacts of bi-directional charging on customer behaviour, impacts to their EV, and test how to best share value back with customers.
Expression of interest are now open for the trial which will commence in 2026: https://lnkd.in/g_mvftqB

3dKudos to Origin for taking the lead with this vehicle-to-grid subscription offer! A smart step toward giving EV owners more value while supporting grid flexibility and affordability. Excited to see how this develops and what it means for customers and the energy system.
