Very interesting discussion on Flash based FPGAs. Highly recommend watching the discussion on YouTube even if you have never used Flash based FPGAs. There are a bunch of interesting and surprising historical infos on FPGAs Mr. Peera gives out. Following are the key takeaways I would like to highlight from this discussion: 1. Theory used for call routing in telephone networks (Bell Labs innovation) was used to create the basis for routing inside high-end FPGAs in the '90s (and this was not done at Xilinx). 2. Growth story of Microchip FPGAs due to the use of non-volatile technology (less leaky when compared to SRAM tech). 3. Why Microchip put a RISC-V core into the PF2 FPGA (even when the predecessor SF2 had an ARM core inside it). 4. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐌𝐎𝐒? CMOS, or Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor, technology uses both NMOS and PMOS transistors to create logic gates with low power consumption and high noise immunity. These characteristics make CMOS the backbone of digital electronics and VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) circuits. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐋𝐒𝐈 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: CMOS gates form the basic building blocks for complex digital systems. Their energy efficiency enables portable and battery-powered devices.
