Utrecht Life Sciences’ Post

Important discussions in Strasbourg driven by Utrecht Life Scientist Roel Vermeulen🟥 on how exposome science can inform healthier, more sustainable urban design. Strong calls for data accessibility, an Exposome Cities Network, and embedding health in EU frameworks show the growing policy relevance of this field. https://lnkd.in/eYbANff4

🌍 Urban Exposome at the European Parliament This was already my third visit to the European Parliament this year to discuss the future of the exposome, health, and innovation. In my STOA report (https://lnkd.in/dMabcXRv), I identified 7 key areas (“7 Cs”) where exposome research can help build a healthier, more sustainable, and socially and economically competitive EU. On 10 September in Strasbourg, Members of the European Parliament, researchers, architects, and urban developers explored one of those areas in depth: Cities and the Urban Exposome—the sum of all environmental exposures in urban life. MEP Christophe Clergeau opened the session by recalling the work initiated with the STOA report earlier this year. 💡 Highlights from the discussion 🔹 Prof. Zorana Jovanovic Andersen stressed the urgent health impacts of air pollution, linking it to transport, heating, and net-zero transitions. 🔹 Armand Paardekooper Overman (Mecanoo) illustrated how architectural design and “living labs” can drive longevity and innovation—calling for fewer barriers to experimentation. 🔹 Maaike Schravesande (Heijmans) shared how co-created housing designs foster mental health and social well-being. 🔹 Prof. Roel Vermeulen🟥 highlighted how urban design, and health can be connected through exposome science, supported by models that simulate the impacts of interventions at the neighbourhood level. 🥡 Policy takeaways MEP Fabienne Keller welcomed the strong participation of economic actors, and MEP Marcos Ros Sempere called for: • greater visibility and accessibility of exposome data • an Exposome Cities Network • embedding health in the New European Bauhaus and future EU frameworks. ⁉️ Why it matters. This dialogue underscores a clear message: health must become a core principle of urban planning if Europe is to create resilient, equitable, and future-proof cities.
