Our team investigated this using the DLR ATLAS test facility (Altitude Test Chamber for Low-Pressure Analysis of FC Systems). 🌟Highlights: 🔹 PEM fuel cell system tested up to 5712 m altitude in our low-pressure chamber. 🔹 Comprehensive parameter study conducted using statistical Design of Experiments (#DoE). 🔹 Development of a novel pressure and load-adaptive control strategy. 🔹 Demonstrated 29 % net power gain at an altitude of 5700 m. 🔹 Applicable to #aviation and high-altitude applications. 📑 Abstract: The effect of low ambient pressure on a #PEMFC system is investigated by operating a non-pressurized #fuelcell system inside a low-pressure chamber. Polarization curve measurements between 980 and 491 hPa revealed up to 59 % net power losses by using the manufacturer’s default control settings, mainly due to stack drying and parasitic power demands. Using a Design of Experiments approach, optimal control parameters for stack temperature and cathode stoichiometry were derived, validated, and successfully applied. At 497 hPa, a 29 % net power increase was achieved compared to default operation. A simplified pressure- and load-adaptive strategy is proposed to ensure high PEMFC performance under low-pressure conditions. ✒️ Authors: Dominik Murschenhofer | Jonas Settele | Cornelie Bänsch 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e6WS2Xww 👉 What do you think: What role will PEMFCs play in advancing #hydrogen technologies for aviation? #FuelCells #Hydrogen #Aviation #EnergyConversion_and_Management #CleanEnergy #SustainableAviation #Electrochemistry #ResearchAndDevelopment

CCS just went commercial: Northern Lights injected its first CO₂; Oxy’s STRATOS got the first DAC storage permits; Denmark’s Greensand is gearing up as an EU hub. 🌍 Northern Lights is live (1.5 Mt/yr now, ≥5 Mt/yr next). STRATOS targets 0.5 Mt/yr from 2025—real tons, real pipes. Demand is here: Microsoft bought 80% of tech-based removals this year—making offtakes bankable. If you build/finance/buy CDR: secure transport+storage, standardize MRV, lock long-term offtakes. 🤔 Will CCS scale like grid infrastructure—or stall without more buyers? Field-ready energy storage: bridging batteries and fuel. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s new ExCURSion programme is developing a portable, closed-loop system that captures CO₂, synthesises liquid carbon-based fuel in the field, and then converts it back into electricity. This hybrid approach aims to combine the energy density of traditional fuels with the operational flexibility of batteries—potentially reducing risky resupply missions. Current challenges include slow fuel generation—30× slower than battery recharge—and durability of CO₂ sorbents. If successful, this could transform energy resilience in remote and high-pressure environments.
