DIALOGUES | Is cognitive decline really inevitable with age? 🧠 Republic Polytechnic lecturers David Chin and Josephine Tay challenged this question with a 15-week Mediated Learning Programme, aimed at developing socio-emotional capacity, a sense of agency and improved memory as part of preventative care for elderly with dementia. 🔗 Watch the full Dialogue to discover their insights and hear first-hand from Mdm Zaiton Binte Zainal, a participant of the programme. https://lnkd.in/ePcXsdrg #theheadfoundation #dialogues #cognitivehealth #dementia #mentalhealth #activeaging

What if we stopped trying to “fix” dementia distress and started looking differently at the problem instead? That’s exactly what the Dementia Learning Centre is doing: using a systems-thinking lens to understand distress not as something to suppress, but as something to solve with the person, their whānau and the environment around them. It’s a powerful shift, one that could transform how we care. 💡 Read more ➡️ https://ow.ly/whgB50WNWiG 🎓 And register for our upcoming Summit to explore these approaches alongside fellow leaders and practitioners ➡️ https://ow.ly/RIau50WNWiJ #DementiaCare #DementiaLearning #SystemicThinking #AlzheimersNZ #Dementia #MateWareware

🧠 Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging. One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that dementia is an inevitable consequence of getting older. This myth can be harmful—it delays diagnosis, discourages prevention, and fuels stigma. In this video, Lance A. Slatton explains why dementia is a distinct medical condition, not just “part of aging”: ✔️ Dementia is caused by diseases, not aging itself ✔️ Not all older adults will develop it ✔️ Younger people can also be affected ✔️ Early intervention matters By challenging misconceptions, we can: 🔹 Encourage timely assessments & treatment 🔹 Promote healthier brain lifestyles 🔹 Support those living with dementia with dignity 👉 Let’s spread the truth: aging does not equal dementia. Together, we can change perspectives and improve care. #dementia #aging #myths #stigmas #factis #awareness #caregiving #caregivers #caregiver #memory #memorycare #debunk #myth #alzheimer #alzheimers #dementiaawareness #dementiatips #dementiacare #dementiasupport #endalz #stopalz #help #health #healthcare

Can music truly transform the lives of those living with advanced dementia? Research from New York City's hospital system suggests it can. By learning the musical preferences of 100 individuals and training nurses in specialized dementia care, they found that consistent exposure to music in the morning and afternoon had a lasting positive effect on mood and behavior throughout the day. Similar to the lingering warmth felt after a visit from a loved one, music can act as a gentle companion, reducing stigma and improving the overall quality of life for dementia patients. #dementia #musictherapy #eldercare #alzheimers #healthcare #compassion

🎤 Today I have the absolute honor of speaking at the Alzheimer’s Association Upper Peninsula Conference on a topic that’s incredibly close to my heart: 🧠 The Crossroad of Communication & Behavioral Expressions: New Approaches When your person with dementia is struggling, they’re not giving you a hard time, they’re having a hard time(which often gives you a hard time). And what we often call “behaviors” are actually expressions. Unmet needs. Misunderstood messages. Moments of distress that haven’t found the right outlet. In today’s session, I’m sharing fresh approaches for interpreting those expressions with more compassion and clarity, and how intentional communication can de-escalate, connect, and empower. This is not just theory. It’s hands-on, heart-forward strategy built from decades of walking this path and helping others do the same. To the incredible caregivers, professionals, and advocates in the room today, thank you for being here. Your work matters. Your voice matters. You matter. #JoannaDementiaExpert #AlzheimersAssociation #Dementia #Caregiver #alzheimers

We are delighted to announce the publication of our new Practice Guide on Human Rights and Dementia. Written for health and social care professionals along with family caregivers, the book's lay out and chapter format, enables the reader to apply human rights principles and values to better inform their everyday practice. Throughout the chapters we argue that human rights violations can be both macro or micro, but regardless of their scale and magnitude, any violation that affronts dignity will be harmful to the person’s physical and mental health and to their overall quality of life and well-being. Human rights are all around us. We believe that by bringing rights-based principles and values to life, through case examples, research findings and personal experiences, practitioners, family caregivers and anyone with an interest in dementia, will be empowered to provide rights-based dignity-enhancing care and support.

This is a significant step forward. Dementia care is about dignity, autonomy, and recognising the fundamental rights of every individual. By translating human rights principles into everyday practice, this guide will empower health professionals and family caregivers to challenge assumptions, protect dignity, and enhance quality of life. At MiKare Health, we share this belief: rights-based care isn’t optional, it’s essential. Resources like this make the invisible visible, helping us embed respect and humanity into every interaction. Congratulations to the authors on creating a guide that will truly empower those on the frontline of care. 👏 #MiKareHealth #WholeHealth #PatientFirst #CareWithRespect

An interactive simulation is giving people the chance to better understand what living with dementia can feel like, from the frustration of forgetting everyday tasks to the stress of managing distractions. Many who try it say the experience changes how they view and support loved ones facing cognitive decline. Beyond personal reflection, these kinds of programs can also shape how we design spaces, train caregivers, and build more compassionate communities for those affected. #DementiaAwareness #EmpathyInCare #Technology #Healthcare https://lnkd.in/gVAe_4cd
