In 2017, I imported one of the first Google Homes to Sweden. My son Rishi in the video (1 year old) was barely talking, but he was already trying to play with it. It felt like the future had arrived early. I could control my lights, thermostat and more with voice. Fast forward to 2025: I can have a full conversation with ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode. Fluent. Fast. Funny. It's now my favourite activity while driving. And yet… when I call most customer support numbers in Sweden, I still hear: 👉 “Tryck 9 för engelska.”/ 👉 “Press 9 for English.” Here’s the curious part: 97% of businesses already use some form of voice tech (e.g. IVR) But only 21% say they’re “very satisfied” with what they have See State of Voice report PDF in the first comment below. So on the consumer side, we’ve leapt from Google Home → ChatGPT/Grok unhinged mode. On the business side, we’re still in IVR hell. Why? Is it really technology holding companies back? Are we as customers not accepting of AI Voice Customer Support or Sales Support Agents? How long before we stop waiting in telephone queues?

This chart is a breakdown of overall ChatGPT usage. Lots of interesting info here. I was happy to see Asking About The Model as a category. It’s not huge but it’s still good to know I’m not the only one that asks ChatGPT how it works and what it can do 😂. Does anything else stand out to you? Voice engagement is leaping forward, driving actions beyond simple questions. Imagine scheduling audits, approving purchase orders, or identifying missed risks—all through voice commands. This isn't just another ChatGPT engagement; it understands your data, workflows, risks, strategies, and remembers everything across sessions for multiple users. It's a smart system generating outcomes and executing activities. How can voice-driven actions transform your business operations?

[ChatGPT usage breakdown 🤔] a.k.a. How people actually use Chat Assistants in real-life The National Bureau of Economic Research published some research classifying usage patterns within a representative sample of ChatGPT conversations. My hunch is the data pattern is imperfect, still, it's useful to reflect on how people use those apps (accross personal and professional use cases) ⤵️

I wouldn't personally take the percentages shown as facts, but you can take a general picture of the most popular usecases. Obviously the market is mature enough that most software developers are running away from GPT models to better dev focused models.

Public-facing LLMs will likely become the “idea machines” best suited for creativity, conversation and exploration. In these cases, non-deterministic outputs aren’t a flaw, they’re a feature (classic transformer architecture). I think brainstorming, tutoring, roleplay, or writing feel more valuable when the answers aren’t identical every time. On the other side, smaller or specialized language models (SLMs), often connected to deterministic computational engines, will dominate in areas where precision matters i.e. programming, math, compliance, data analysis, or industry-specific use cases. Here, correctness can’t be optional. The future will probably be hybrid - LLMs handling natural language fluency, with deterministic systems running in the background to ensure accuracy where it’s non-negotiable. #SLM #LLM #Deterministic #NonDeterministic

We’re living through a watershed moment: the first years after ChatGPT. These are years we’ll remember — when people are still creating, deciding, and shaping the world around them. Enjoy sweeping your floor, writing a thank-you note, or having a real conversation with a friend. Hold fast to those efforts. There’s a lot of capital chasing ways to digitize human experience in the name of leverage or pain-avoidance. Commerce has always sold tools to ease pain — whether the pain of scarcity or of effort. But the best companies are the ones that keep people engaged and central, not those that aim to replace them. In the end, it’s like Maverick flying a plane instead of a drone. The point is to live — to affect change.
